I tried to read this book as a teenager like... 20 years ago. Ugh, when did I get so old... Anyways, I couldn't remember why I couldn't get past the first 150 pages or however much it was exactly, and since I had checked it out from the library back then, I thought maybe I had needed to return it early for some reason. Still, I had some nostalgic feelings connected to this book, even though I hadn't been able to finish it and I was curious why it was I'd have felt that way, but didn't actually recall that much about the book in general.
It took me some time to actually track it down because I couldn't recall the title, but when I found it here on Amazon, and on Kindle, at that, I snapped it up and got really excited to sit down with a book I thought I had liked a lot in my younger years, and this time, I wanted to finish it.
Oh boy, did that ever NOT happen...
I managed to make it to nearly precisely the same place I stopped years ago, from what I can recall, and after struggling with it up to that point, it all came back to me as to why I closed this book and chucked it back at the library. It sucks.
The narrative is really dull. It's too wordy. I found myself thinking several times, "Oh, just get ON with it already!!" The main character isn't all that interesting, I didn't feel connected to him at all, and wasn't sympathetic to anything happening to him or to his friends. And his "love at first sight" with the heroine was so cliche and downright stupid. It was like the author didn't have a clue how love works and decided that the male and female leads should just be suddenly together without any other character development between them.
I don't usually put a book down before finishing it, even when it's not all that good, but once in a while I come across a book like this that is so absolutely BAD that I can't push myself to waste my life's energy on trying to get from start to finish and I throw it into the DNF pile.
