The first major alien offensive against Earth has been blunted, winning humanity time to deploy new weapons and prepare new tactics as Earth’s space navies prepare to take the offensive. But the enigmatic aliens have plans of their own - a full-scale attack on Earth that will either win the war in a single stroke or lose it.

The stakes have never been so high. The fate of humanity itself is in the balance. And, as battle rages across the solar system, as humanity finds its back pushed firmly against the war, millions of people - military and civilian - struggle for survival, knowing that victory will come with a very high price ...

... And defeat will be the end of everything humanity holds dear.

This standalone in the Ark Royal series covers the Tadpoles attack on Earth. As such it loses some tension as those of us who have read the series already know the outcome and in some cases the fate of minor characters. New readers should read this one between books 2 and 3 for maximum enjoyment. Told from multiple POV's we get a look at what's happening from the cockpit of fighter pilots, the bridges of starships, the offices of the British Prime minister and men and women both on the moon and in the streets of a devastated England. I liked the way CN tells a story, characters don't know what's happening and are struggling to cope some successfully some not so. Good battle scequences. We also find out what happens to Molly, the social climbing wife of one of Ark Royal's fighter pilots that went missing. A minor mystery solved but it added an element of human interest to the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good story that can easily stand on it's own. 19 July 2017

A well told story. If one has followed the Ark Royal series, this doesn't add much new drama. It does offer a very interesting look at what happened to Earth while the Ark Royal was away on her mission. There are new characters and new aspects of some existing characters. It is told well and has good pacing throughout. Another interesting twist is this is the first real view of the Tadpole's perspective to the conflict.

It isn't earth shattering, or even ground breaking. But it is a very good story that can easily stand on it's own.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good description earth's struggle as space battle debris wrecks Earh. 16 July 2017

Did describe trauma the world would go through due to disasters from space warfare raining debris on Earth. Lot of action as Earth's fleet battles Tadpoles. I did not give it 5 stars as I have other books in the series since it was a good book but did not seem as compelling as earlier books.
4.0 out of 5 stars Christopher Nuttall is a great author 21 July 2017

Christopher has written a very disturbing book that shows what an unprepared world would do against a determined enemy. One that did not want earthlings to propagate through the galaxy. Our history of continuous war could very well determine our fate. Very thought provoking writing.
2.0 out of 5 stars Not the best 19 July 2017

I've read this entire series, but this book kind of lost me. Yes there is space battles, and a police story, and and runaway teen, an an unfaithful wife, a the Prime Minister, on and on. Not the best out of 10.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good addition to the story 16 July 2017

This wraps up several unanswered questions brought up in the original series, and is a good read. Not my favorite work of Nuttall though. I'd give this one a pass unless your a big fan of ark royal.
