I eagerly awaited this new book, but it seems like it was barely updated from the previous version I borrowed from the library. For example, there is no mention of the new SMART train that opened last year that makes it easier to visit some small towns just north of San Francisco.
In general, this book is very poor if you're relying on public transit. In Los Angeles, the light rail extension to Santa Monica Pier has been open for two years, but it instead suggests to take a slower bus. Buses between Los Angeles and San Francisco are faster than the train, but it only suggests the Greyhound bus, which leaves from a bus station in the sketchy outskirts of L.A. Megabus and Boltbus have been operating for years and offer a direct ride from L.A.'s Union Station in the city center or Hollywood to downtown San Francisco.
I would suggest one uses this book as a starting point for research, then supplement your trip details with more online research.
