Product Description

"Real life is messy and strange, and our ride through it left plenty of bruises, slashed hearts, a few lifeless bodies, and blood and smoke in its wake. But it’s our story, this rather mangled tale.”

Some of us have to get really dirty before we can become truly clean.

Sixteen years ago I had survived my Old Man’s murder.
Never again will I surrender my heart.
Never again will I sacrifice to the Club.
But that all changed in one night.
I returned home and crashed into him,
and my past and present blew up in my face.
Both of us lonely, running on empty, and unwilling to admit it.
Until now.
Now I feel things I'd forgotten about, want things I'd cut out of my insides.

Love not only stings when you lose it, when it’s ripped away,
When it first sinks its teeth into you, it can cut just as raw and sting just as deep.

I'd forgotten that.

This is also a story about the love between my sister and me, and our redemption through two families—one bonded by blood, the other by brotherhood—that tore us apart yet bound us together forever.

Who holds the keys to betrayal? To suspicion? To trust?
To brotherhood? To family?
To redemption and a bleeding heart?
Right now, I just might.

I enjoyed this book, a bit different to your usual biker romance. Worth the read... Characters were written well, easy to get into the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars My head is still reeling from this book! 4 October 2015
By KatieAnn - Published on Amazon.com

You know when you read the warning about 18+ and graphic violence and sex? Well, for the most part, those books pale in comparison to what Cat Porter serves us and boy, you will gasp and do a lot of jaw dropping. Then marvel.

Lock is the Road Captain for the One-Eyed Jacks MC in South Dakota. He keeps things close to the cuff and doesn't let anyone get to him. That is, until he meets Grace Quillen. Grace is not like most woman he's met. She's the former and infamous Old Lady of one of the club's most beloved presidents, Dig. Tragedy in Grace's personal life draws her back into dangerous territory, forcing her to break a promise she made a decade and a half ago, and risks her very life by coming back home but she has no choice. The thing about family is that they never go away, and what Grace doesn't realize is that she's the key to her own happiness, and saving the MC she once loved and belonged to.

Lock and Key took me by surprise in many good ways and in some ways I could have done without but for the most part, this is a very engrossing read. For one, the MC life in this book is actually presented with more realistic authenticity rather than as mere dressing, safe and pedestrian. Bikes and riding bikes were actually part of the character's lifestyle and in more detail than I've ever read in MC books and I enjoyed it a lot. Either Ms. Porter did a lot of research or she's a rider herself. Either way, I was impressed.

Let's get to Grace--she is a kicka$$ female lead. I was really pleased that she wasn't the typical damsel and predictable heroine that are in most MC books in which being 'sassy' is considered 'tough'. Grace is actually a tough chick and I liked and respected her a lot but she was also soft and vulnerable. Never childish or over the top dramatic. Thank god. Lock was an interesting character. Unexpected, which I appreciated. None of the characters read like any other character I'd read and there was a lot of grit and authenticity. Lock and Key offers a darker and dirtier side of the MC world that most books dumb down and gloss over. Cat Porter does not shy away from that and I liked it. She gave us depth, intrigue, mystery, thriller, romance, erotica and so much more. It was so refreshing if not very heady. And the plot--holy cow--it did not give up or quit for a breath. I did a lot of wide-eyed, 'whoa, did that just happen?' and 'oh my god...'

A few of the things that had my head spinning was the plot--there are literally about six different plot threads. Flashbacks. A whole lotta of 'em. And like, four endings. To be honest, too many plot threads can get confusing and I generally dislike flashbacks when it's not done properly. CJ Roberts and River Savage are one of the few that have attempted it and did it brilliantly. While still not my favorite, the flashbacks were intelligently used to re-inforce the present moments that Grace was experiencing while giving us some back story from her younger years and how it related to the current situation. It didn't take away from the emotional journey Grace was having with Lock but it inherently does but it made sense and it came together quite nicely. Her plot is so complicated that it's amazing she kept such diligent track of all the threads and left nothing dangling. That's a huge achievement and it floored me but it was also mentally exhausting at some points but again, stitched together very nicely.

Some have commented on these characters being in their 40s but a lot of KA's books are in this age group so it wasn't anything new for me. There were a few other things that snagged at me but I tend to read as a reader/beta reader/editor all in one go but not enough to bother me at any great length. The writing style was hard for me to get into and it took me past the 40% mark to really get into it but I'm glad I did. It will stay with you long after you read it. Can't wait for Random & Rare!

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 Flies By Eagles Stars! 13 February 2015

5 Flies By Eagles Stars!
This book started off in the present with Grace on her way home after being gone for sixteen years. She stops at a motel and decides to walk to this bar and have a drink. There she meets a man named Miller. After some talking, dancing and some heavy kissing they decide to move things back to her room. When Grace wakes up she sees a tattoo on Millers back and it causes all kinds of old memories to flood back into her mind. She makes a silent get away.

Miller is a member in the One Eyed Jacks MC. The same MC that she's had nothing to do with since she lost her husband Dig who was also a member. Grace is so broken. She's been floating around for sixteen years. Dig was the love of her life. I was so happy that we got to go back in the past and get to know Dig and see into their lives before he was killed.

“You’re my wildflower, baby. You’re all these gentle, simple colors, but you’re a survivor too, like me. Strong enough to grow on these rocks.” ~ Dig

Grace knew that she would sooner or later run into Miller. She just didn't know that Miller was somebody that she had known in her past.
Miller and Grace had some amazing chemistry.
We also got to dive into Millers mind. He was also broken. While on his second tour in the Army his brother was killed. His brother Wreck was Digs best friend and he was also like a brother to Grace. So you can imagine how strong of a connection that Grace and Miller have.

“I’ve never had it special, Grace. Never interested me to tell you the truth. But I feel something for you, been feeling it a while now, just didn’t want to deal with it with your sister’s thing going on. Then you showed up at the party, and I couldn’t ignore it anymore.” His teeth grazed his bottom lip. “I don’t like complications, but it’s not so complicated between us. Is it, baby?”

Grace had some secrets of her own that needed to be dealt with. She had a lot on her plate. Especially since her reason for coming home is to be close to her sister who is very sick. Grace reaches out to the One Eyed Jacks for help with her sisters illness.
Once back at the club old rivals start showing up and things get a bit messy. Grace is asked to help the club. It doesn't set well with Lock. Will her and Lock ever be able to get past what the club has asked her to do? Will Grace finally rid herself of her secret? Will Grace find a second love of her life? You will have to read it to find out.

Truth is a painful sword. It cuts deep and stings, but the pain evaporates, the blood dries, and in the place of such savagery is a gleaming absolution and an absolute purity.

If you like reading MC books then I would defiantly recommend this one to you.
I'm super excited to read the next book in this series. I'm hoping it's about another MC brother that lost his way in the club after his wife died.
Awesome job Cat Porter!! I loved your book:))

It's difficult to articulate what makes this story wonderful without spoiling the reading experience for you. I'll try though. Let me start by saying I've never read an MC romance like this before. What sets this one apart is how honest and deep the emotions of the characters are written. It's much more than hot, sweaty, dirty sex violence and bad deals gone wrong. In fact, there is very little of that. Of course you get to see some MC action however this story isn't centered on that. Lock & Key is centered on Grace and her roots to her family, both the one given to her in blood as well as the one she chose in marriage. You see her struggle with her past as she tries to reconcile it with her present, with Miller. Their relationship builds under the scrutiny of the club and of dealings in the past. I love the author's writing style and how she weaved the past and present together so seamlessly. I never felt like I was thrown between the two however it felt more like the two blending right before me eyes. It was refreshing to read an MC romance that focused on the emotional elements, the ties that bind people together instead of the blood, gore and sex. Again. you get all of that too it just isn't the core of the story. I also love that Miller is an American Indian. That is something I haven't seen in an MC romance either. I love this story, I love the writing style, I loved seeing the past and present weave, dance and fuse together. I absolutely recommend this to those whom are afraid of reading the MC romance genre. I think the emotional element will appeal to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot and Sexy 11 July 2014
By Heidi - Published on Amazon.com

MC romance is my number 1 guilty pleasure. So when I heard the positive buzz surrounding this one, I couldn't wait to read it. The fact that the hero and heroine were in their forties just fueled my anticipation. Yes, Cat Porter, we love hot stories about couples whose 20's along with immaturity and naïve perception is far behind them.
I loved Grace from page one. She's a strong beautiful woman who has dealt with her share of ups and downs but is still in control and tragedy has not broken her. She doesn't waste time wallowing in self-pity but faces her demons head on in a way that only a woman who has lived long enough to know the difference between a real problem and an inconvenience could do and still be incredibly sexy in the process. Lock is a straight up hot Alpha whose devotion to the club and the people he cares about is his first priority and anyone who threatens either, will have to answer to him.
They don't know the extent of how their lives intertwine when they first meet but let themselves give in to an attraction that quickly turns into a heated passion that neither one can step away from.

Author Cat Porter has created more than just a simple biker romance but an intense story about healing shattered pasts, starting over, finding love and coming full circle into a future that has always been uncertain. This well written novel is fast-paced, off the rails sexy, and filled with the raw emotion that will keep the reader invested until the end. I hope this author makes this a series so I can add her future work to my MC addiction. Highly recommend.
5.0 out of 5 stars My new favorite shelf author! 28 February 2016

I picked this book up based on a review by another well established author. There are a lot of MC books out there, and I'm very choosy in which ones I choose to read. She was not wrong about this book. It was amazing.

The synopsis just teases you with the depth of the past and present that make up this story. They both have a past that is entwined, they just don't know it when they meet. A chance encounter at a bar is the starting line for a road trip full of tragedy, loss, love and redemption. I completely fell in love with Lock, he is not ordinary in any way. There are so many layers to him, he's almost a fantasy. And the two of them together are like to souls finally finding each other. But before that can happen, a lot of wrongs have to be righted for them both to be free.

So happy I took the jump into this book. Cat Porter is now a new favorite, and I can't wait to read more of this series.
