5.0 out of 5 stars Delightful Adventures of the Gods 6 May 2014
By Ron Fritsch - Published on
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
I’m quite fond of River Fairchild’s Death and Chronos stories collected in Living the Afterlife. That Death, otherwise known as Thanatos, and Chronos, otherwise known as Time, are “sidekicks” shouldn’t surprise us. And with the fate of the world and all mortals in their hands, their doing what male buddies do so well—goofing off—causes big-time disruption for the other gods and goddesses and endless amusement for the reader.

What’s not to love about these guys? Most people see peanut-popping Death as “a nice-looking young man,” if they see him at all. “Only those whose time has come would see the skeletal visage.” And with this character, “Death on a Harley” acquires new meaning.

When Chronos decides to remove his anachronistic green shag carpet, embedded with the peanuts that get away from bony Death, he chooses to replace it with gold shag. Angry at Evil for making time go backward, Chronos tells him all we need to know: “You can’t screw up time this way. That’s my job.”

The other characters in these delightful adventures of Death and Chronos include a butt-kicking War, a cherubic Eros, an earth-loving Gaia and the Fates, the three sisters who spin the thread of one’s life, measure it and cut it.

Did I mention River Fairchild’s writing? This is her description of Nyx (Night), the goddess Chronos is in love with: “Midnight hair swirled about a gown made of starlight.”

4.0 out of 5 stars Meet Death and Chronos, the perfectly (mis?)matched duo! 16 October 2014

I wanted to read something different, so I settled for this collection. I'm so glad I did.

We meet Death and Chronos, the perfectly (mis?)matched duo. Picture this: Death rides a Harley, listens to the Beach Boys on his i-Pod and has a weakness for peanuts which he tosses into the air and then catches in his eye socket. The anachronistic Chronos has a gold shag carpet at his place, and carries an hourglass which is used to stop and start time...

Their crazy world is filled with fun, mischief and friendly squabbles as they embark on one adventure after the other, including a Halloween Party, Goddess Ball and a Valentine Ball. Their various activities include playing pool, poker, surfing, bowling, a visit to a pre-school...and just imagine these two on vacation while the rest of the world is in a tizz! Really funny!

I must say that the author sure knows how to 'turn a phrase'. I really enjoyed the banter amongst the characters. The stories are witty and hilarious. Great entertainment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable - I hope there will be more 31 May 2014

This collection of short stories concerns gods, mostly Evil, Death, and Time. In "reality" they're uncaring breakers of man and mountain, but in this collection they're humanized in very humorous ways.

Death is friendly to small children, and chronos cries. Evil is a "cool guy" with succubi for serving girls.

I sped through the stories without putting them down and I'm tempted to harangue the author for more. I see her writing one a day; c'mon, a dickens or a Dumas would do it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Death Rides a Harley 19 May 2014
By Elephant's Child - Published on

Death does indeed ride a Harley, and his best friend Chronos has a gold shag pile carpet.
Who knew?
I loved this slant-eyed look at Death and Chronus - yes they both have important jobs, but they also have fun. Lots of fun. Poker, movies, parties, a little flirting...
And to add to the joy? Jeeves finally is finally put in his rightful place.

5.0 out of 5 stars Death does ride a Harley! 17 May 2014

An absolutely hilarious collection of stories featuring a peanut addicted Death and his best friend Chronos. Oh the mischief Immortals cause!

I love getting a peek into the weird and wonderful world of Immortals. Death and Chronos seem like an unlikely pair, but a funner duo I have yet to meet. They play poker, bowl, and even go on vacation. And does the world miss them when they do? You have to read to find out!
