I have read a number of books by Helen Forrester and this was another excellent read. Here is a woman just an ordinary housewife who being in the wrong place at the wrong time becomes a prostitute. At first it is just a bit of fun and some extra money, but then things change and she finds herself in some rather nasty and precarious situations. Her best friend is seriously ill and she keeps on being a lady of the night so that she can buy the medicines for her friends. She has a heart of gold. Really enjoyed this story, quite sad and also poverty driven.
Absolutely loved this.. Have read numerous books over the years involving women and how they coped during the war years and this ranks high upon the list.. Daisy is superb.. a woman after my own heart ( well almost... ha ha ha).. I couldn't put it down, read it until the early hours of the morning..Will look for more books from Helen Forrester..
A very nice story about a commoner who finds herself drawn 'accidently' into street-walking as a means of raising money in need &, on a more personal basis, as means of receiving some affectionate attention.
A good cup-of-tea, slippers & throw-rug weekender.
A good read tells the tale of what you would do if you whore without money and accidently starting to be a lady of the night. Its a no barred story with the ups and downs in the 1940s life. it is easy to relate to her and easy a read.
I really enjoyed this book. It described how hard life was in the 30’s. It showed Daisy as a strong and warm character, and what she had to endure to help her family and best friend.
I am an avid fan of Helen Forrester and have quite a few of her books. This book did not dissapoint me, it was wonderfully well written and kept me glued to the very end.
I particularly like the biographies of Helen Forrester and whenever I read them my heart goes out to the poor young girl who was made to suffer for her parents quite inadequate parenting, leaving the care of the children to a young Helen.
2.0 out of 5 starsNot one of Helen Forrester's best, but still enjoyable

A good tale, but I found the period setting unconvincing, maybe because I don't know about the Liverpool Irish community, but the characters seem to live a life from about 50 years earlier than the setting of the 1930s. Perhaps if the author had contrasted Daisy's situation with someone from a more mainstream community it would have worked better.
I loved this series when it was televised and as my daughter didn't see it at the time, I added it to her Christmas presents. She also enjoyed it and says as well as being entertaining, it has given her an incite into the history of working class people of that era, which when you think about it, we often see drama's about the history of the middle and upper classes, not the working classes.
I can't wait to borrow it from her, so that I can have a second treat.
