Product Description

This hilarious new graphic novel is about Dave Barker, a bumbling Brit who moves to Japan with dreams of success, only to fail at every turn. Along the way, Dave teaches English to feral kids, clashes with roommates, goes on disastrous dates, and upsets the Yakuza. Funny, honest, sad, and surprising, this book will convince you that it is not so easy to make it "big in Japan".

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, deserves to be more widely read 27 July 2016

What a fantastic comic. Fantastic dialogue, brilliant artwork and hilarious situations that David, our hapless anti-hero English teacher in Japan, finds himself in. With elements of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, the Beano and Viz, Carlier skewers the world of chain language school teaching in Japan, but does so in an intelligent self-effacing way. Every page ends with a punchline but there is a narrative too. And by the end I almost felt sorry for the pot-bellied Peter Pan doomed never to learn his lesson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very funny look at life and teaching in Japan. 17 July 2016
By Japan Resident - Published on Amazon.com

With an excellent observational eye Chris Carlier has captured the experience of teaching English in Japan perfectly. If you have ever taught in Japan, you will read this and laugh and cringe in equal measure, and you will thank the Lord you are not like the main character (while secretly worrying that, actually, you are). If you have never taught in Japan, you should read it anyway, because it can't fail to cheer you up!

As a fellow expat who lived in Japan for over 6 years, I absolutely LOVED this book. I was able to relate to many of the instances Mr. Carlier chose to include in his book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, relatable stories with goofy, detailed art 27 July 2016
By Joshua Wong - Published on Amazon.com

Really enjoyed this book because I felt like I could relate to it. I could see many parallels in my experience, especially how I view myself and how I view other foreigners here, which is not a particularly bad thing.

If you live in Japan, lived in Japan, or want to live in Japan, I recommend this book. It really gets what it's like to be a foreigner in the country—good and bad.

Great book. Speaks the truth about japan. It's funny but happens to a lot of my friends. I laughed almost everything.
