The Little Grave: A completely heart-stopping crime thriller (Detective Amanda Steele Book 1) Kindle Edition
It’s been five years since Detective Amanda Steele’s life was derailed by the tragic death of her young daughter. The small community of Dumfries, Virginia, may have moved on, but Amanda cannot. When the man who killed Lindsey is found murdered, she can’t keep away from the case.
Fighting her sergeant to be allowed to work such a personal investigation, Amanda is in a race to prove that she can uncover the truth. But the more she digs into the past of the man who destroyed her future, the more shocking discoveries she makes. And when Amanda finds the link between a silver bracelet in his possession and the brutal unsolved murder of a young woman five years ago, she realizes she’s caught up in something darker than she ever imagined and suspects that more girls could be in danger.
But as Amanda edges toward the truth, she gets closer to a secret as personal as it is deadly. Amanda has stumbled upon a dangerous killer, and she must face some terrible truths in order to catch this killer – and save his next victim as she couldn’t save her own daughter…
A gripping, page-turning thriller full of mystery and suspense. Perfect for fans of Rachel Caine, Lisa Regan and Robert Dugoni.

Five and a half years later we meet, Detective Amanda Steele, who lost her husband and young daughter with the baby she was carrying by a drunken driver. Amanda has never recovered from it. When one of her friends call to tell her that Chad Palmer the driver, had been realised from jail and found dead in a motel room. Prince William county Police department would rather Amanda stay away from the case as it possible could be murder. But Amanda presses the boss to let her go on it. He agrees but she must have a partner who takes change. Amanda doesn't want a partner but she has to, so Detective Trent Stenson is picked. From then on you can't stop reading, you find it very hard to put down. There are twists and turns with the biggest twist at the end that you just don't see coming.
A Highly recommended read.
Well that was a curve ball of an ending! I had been wondering what the twist for this was going to be and while, for me, it wasn't mind blowing (probably because I could get my head around it happening quite easily), it was definitely a surprise I hadn't even considered, except in hindsight.
The characters were quite likeable and I did enjoy Detective Amanda Steele. She was interesting and her grief was very relatable and came across as very real. I also ended up liking her work partner as well and am looking forward to reading more about them.
The story as a whole kept my interest and kept me wondering where the path was going to take me. There were no scenes or chapters that were dull and overall it was really enjoyable. Definitely recommend, as this is a great start to what could be a fantastic series.
After the tragedy that forever changed Detective Amanda Steele’s life, when she lost her daughter and husband at the hands of a drunk driver, Amanda becomes faced with a case five years later when the body of the man responsible for the death of her family is found, appeared to have been murdered.
Carolyn Arnold has put together a chilling tale that had me on the edge of my seat. It is gripping, intense and had me invested into its story and lead character straight off the bat. I was taken on such an emotional journey, I was exhausted when it was over. For me to feel like that, is a sign of a great book.
I really enjoyed Amanda Steele’s character. She has been through so much and it is a wonder that she is able to put one foot in front of the other. She presents a hard front on the outside but, inside she is so broken. My heart went out to her. She is very complex and I look forward to more layers being peeled back as the series progresses.
The Little Grave is a promising start to a new series. It is fast paced and so actioned packed, the pages just turned themselves in the lead up to the very unexpected conclusion. If you are a fan of crime thriller and police procedurals, you will want to give this one a read.
