The only downside is that when you configure your wireless network using the app both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks have the same network name / SSID. What this meant in practical terms was that a lot of my wireless devices would connect to the 2.4 GHz network and this resulted in very poor throughput / performance, especially for streaming media such as Hulu and Netflix.
The solution is to use the web interface and to set different network names / SSID for the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks. Now only my thermostats connect to the slower 2.4 GHz network with everything else connecting to the 5 GHz network and getting the throughput and performance I'd expect.
Admittedly it's only been a few days since I installed my Velop system but initial impressions are very positive!
Now the not so good... This is only a dual band so if your Velop Router is a tri band, you will not be utilizing all the bandwidth you could. And you have your choice of colors, as long as that color is white!
** Update: No, it's not. Worked for a little less than a month. Read my updates:
Troublesome initial setup. On the phone with technical support for hours. They had to escalate and have someone call me back. I figured it out on my own, completed the setup and had the mesh working. Technical support escalation calls me back - about a week later - told them what I did to make it work. The guy on the phone could not understand what I did - clearly is not trained - just reading scripts (even for an escalation level of support).
Devices work well for about a month, then the child nodes go offline. No amount of resetting, re-configuring, or anything, works. The child nodes connect just fine to the parent - it shows them in the device list as attached. But as devices - not as part of the mesh. The devices themselves show a solid RED LED, which the guide says they're setup, but not getting to the internet.
On the phone with Technical support again -- for four-and-a-half hours. We did nothing except resets-and-retries on all three pieces (Parent and two child nodes). To showcase how little the technical support technician knew - he asked me (multiple times) to plug a child node into the parent node via ethernet cable; they are strictly wireless devices - no ethernet port on the child nodes. Then, he asks me to see what the firmware version is -- how do I do that when the Smart WIFI doesn't recognize the child node as an actual NODE?
And, to wit, I tried to return these through Amazon, after trying for DAYS to get through to technical support (800 number waiting for hours, requesting call-backs that never happened over the space of a week, and online chat- either got sales, ghosted, or just plain never connected). Amazon Customer Service was very determined to have me get Technical Support, so their guy called Linksys to get the technician with whom I wasted over four hours.
final insult: They grant me an RMA and replacement - when I filled in the RMA online, they charged my credit card $371 to send me the replacement set.
Do I reallly want this, or do I just want a refund?
These things suck it so hard, they make the Potomac River flow West.
This *was* my first review:
Setup instructions were absolutely pathetically lousy.
Technical support wasted two hours of my time rebooting, unplugging, doing everything except fixing it.
The "Level 1" technical support guy - God bless him and all - but he just doesn't know squat about networking. He's just reading canned scripts about unplugging, replugging, trying different ports, blah blah blah. Not a CLUE.
All in all.... over four hours troubleshooting one night. Researched the next day, opened a DMZ Static IP on my (Motorola AC1900) cable modem, connected, set it, and it worked (finally).
The iphone app sucks. Drops/breaks/crashes. I used the web login from a PC. At one point, ethernet right to the box.
Really, really irritating: if your router isn't connected - or it drops - the web login makes you re-enter your login/password. Will not save or allow cached logins. What a total crock.
Parental controls - what I bought this thing for - are primitive. I really hoped it would have more sophistication, but it's basically setting up individual controls for each IP address of each device that connects.
That said, once it's all configured, with two remote extenders - it does have solid performance, both speed and signal strength.
Final turd in my rice bowl: Level 2 technical support calls me back. I explain I fixed it and how. Totally over his head. And he's level 2.
Velop looks great and was super easy to setup all three nodes.
Now have super fast connection in every room in the house and can’t wait to start streaming all those 4K videos.
