I read ‘The Likely Resolutions of Oliver Clock’ as my choice from Amazon first for January 2020.
It’s written by Australian author Jane Riley, this is her debut novel.
Can I start by showing my age and saying that at first there were times I was visualising Oliver as Norman Gunston, not because he was funny but because he was a bit of a social misfit and maybe also because I know that Gary McDonald (Norman Gunston’s alter ego) suffered from bouts of depression. Oliver found life a bit overwhelming at times and struggled to rise above those feelings. I loved that he was a funeral director, I’ve only ever read 1 other book where a character worked in the funeral industry so it was a great change of pace. I did feel as if things progressed slowly at times and my interest flagged a bit as a consequence of that but overall I really enjoyed the book
