The brightness is only adjustable when you are using a solid color. If you have it set to rotate through the colors (which looks awesome) it is on full brightness only. On full brightness, it is far to bright for a bedroom at night and arguably too bright for a theater making the rotating color effect pretty useless. This is just a programming issue that the manufacturer should fix.
All in all, for a cheap unit it works very well, but due to its defects it doesn't work too well for my application.
I will have to play around with it to get best coverage of the fiber bundle in the tree, once I make a bracket for it that will be easier to do.
I found an LED light engine on Amazon for $45 and the installation was not difficult. The existing fiber bundle fits into the new light head and the results are remarkably good, on par with the old Fiberstar unit.
Be sure to throw the breaker to remove power before attempting any modification. All responsibility lies with the homeowner when attempting any such modification.
The assembly that holds the metal-halide lamp / reflector, color wheel and drive motor must be removed. They’re not necessary afterwards and the real estate is needed for the new light head. All the hardware on the existing fiber bundle must be removed. There is a small metal funnel at the end of the existing bundle that is needed to keep the existing bundle in proper shape and alignment.
Power comes from existing 120v line used for the old Fiberstar.
