Product description

Product Description

Mark Colvin is a broadcasting legend. He is the voice of ABC Radio’s leading current affairs program PM; he was a founding broadcaster for the groundbreaking youth station Double J; he initiated The World Today program; and he’s one of the most popular and influential journalists in the twittersphere.

Mark has been covering local and global events for more than four decades. He has reported on wars, royal weddings and everything in between. In the midst of all this he discovered that his father was an MI6 spy.

Light and Shadow is the incredible story of a father waging a secret war against communism during the Cold War, while his son comes of age as a journalist during the tumultuous Whitlam and Fraser years and embarks on the risky career of a foreign correspondent.

Mark was witness to some of the most world-changing events, including the Iranian hostage crisis, the buildup to the first Gulf War in Iraq and the direct aftermath of the shocking genocide in Rwanda. But when he contracted a life-threatening illness while working in the field, his life changed forever.

Mark Colvin’s engrossing memoir takes you inside the coverage of major news events and gently navigates the complexity of his father’s double life.

I was keen to get this book, Mark Colvin's autobiography, as he had recently died. He had been an 'iconic' and experienced Australian foreign and war correspondent and very well known and liked. His death was caused by a rare auto-immune disease, contracted while covering the Rawanda attrocity in 1994. The book, which I am half way through, is very much Mark Colvin and brings one into the action and horror in a sometimes visceral manner. Mark was UK born, the son of a British 'diplomat' (MI6 agent), and was well-travelled with his family before completing his English literature degree at Oxford University. His journalism career was entirely with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. After his illness made him unfit for foreign correspondence, he settled down as a radio journalist and anchored the evening news program, 'PM'. His health declined and he received a living kidney transplant which gave him a few more years. His incisive mind was mixed with a strong sense of humanity and at times, humour. He is very much missed.

This book has taken me back to refresh my imperfect memory of current affairs over the past fifty years or so. It is insightful and relevant to the current times.

A delicious use of vocabulary; I can hear his voice reading this to me in his head. A great journalist, and an interesting life.

Sadly I read this just after Mark Colvin has died. His is a real loss to journalism and this book, which is very well written gives the story behind the stories. Have enjoyed it very much

Facinating read of an incredibly interesting life. Colvin lived so many different stories during his life and he is able to recount each of them as though they only happened yesterday.
