I purchased this book after reading Henri Barbusse's classic novel, Under Fire and wanted to read more.
Barbusse paints a very vivid picture of the senseless horror and brutality of the first world war and although this is often hard to read and at times upsetting, you can't help but feel it's something you really have to read.
The reason I gave this book a rather mean 3 stars was simply because it was very similar to Under Fire. Perhaps I have become slightly desensitised after reading Under Fire and Light simply does not have the same impact upon me. Perhaps I was looking forward to Barbusse's harsh writing style applied to a different subject. All I know is that I couldn't help but be a little dissapointed.
So I would conclude, dear reader, that you should absolutely read Light, but only if you've not read Under Fire, otherwise you may feel like you're slightly wasting your time.
