The Life Group, Maura Jortner’s debut YA novel, kept me on the edge of my seat right up to the final moments. The story introduces you to Rachel, a gutsy and persistent young woman searching for her missing sister, and leads you in unceasing twists and turns with a tightly written plot and a conclusion that you never saw coming. Jornter’s skill with suspense leaves the reader questioning what is true and who to trust with each new twist. Rachel’s suspicion of the church where her sister was last seen, propels her on a journey that will reveal hints of her sister’s inner battles and the depth of Rachel’s own convictions about what matters most in her life.

The Life Group explores the complicated dynamics of families and the ways that these patterns shape our identities and our views of the world around us. Using real-world themes and current societal issues, the story of Rachel illustrates one girl’s brave response to factors that seem out of her control. The chemistry between Rachel and Tim resonates with anyone who has experienced the inexplicable connection that can happen with someone you meet in extreme circumstances.

Jornter beautifully captures the determination and intensity of youth through her characters, all who are driven to take action rather than let fate take its course in their lives. Readers experience Rachel’s fierce loyalty, her longing, and her desperation as she lives out one life-altering day. When I reached the last page, I wasn’t ready to let the story go. The Life Group is a great new addition to my list of books to read over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars I could read it again and again. 8 March 2017

My husband and I planned a get-away, and I intended to bring "The Life Group" with me to read while away. When the book came in though, I planned to read a few pages only, but was immediately hooked and compelled to read it from beginning to end to its surprising conclusion. All in a single sitting too. Wow, what a thriller! I found myself identifying with each character to the point that I lost myself in the story. It really was amazing. I could have read it again and again, and actually did read it three times. I'm not sure why, but I just had to.

Nearing the end of the story where Rachel, the main character, watches a brief video over and over again... it reminds me of my wanting to read this book over and over again. Something's luring me to do so.

To be sure I'm a fan of Maura's writing and am hopeful there are more books on the way. She's certainly a gifted writer.

I wonder too if there might be a sequel to this story as I'd love to read how Rachel's life might continue to unfold. Does her view on life change? If so, exactly how? Might she have trust issues? Does she approach people differently? She's about to enter college. Does she? I can easily imagine an enticing sequel to this story. Bravo, Maura Jortner.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wasn't sure what would happen next - unexpected and really fun! 10 January 2017

I must admit - I was thrown a bit by the cover. I didn't realize that Maura Jortner had written a taut psychological thriller that dealt with issues of religion and bias. This is one of those books that you consume in a single sitting, even if that sitting goes until 2 or 3 in the morning! I wasn't sure what would happen next - unexpected and really fun!
5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps the Reader Guessing Until the Very End 12 March 2017
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com

This is truly a page-turning thriller that keeps you guessing until the end! I pride myself on being able to predict the coming twists as I read - but with so many twists and turns and potential suspects - that is no easy feat for this book! The main character is flawed and interesting and the unfolding mystery of what happened to her sister will keep you engrossed to the end. The captivating interludes of the Youtube videos make this novel really stand out.
