This was a really good family saga, I didn’t realise until I started reading it that it was the sequel to Coming Home to Island House. It was great the way everything came together.

Really enjoyed the audio version - although handy to have the book close by in order to refresh, at least initially, how the many characters are connected to each other! Jemma Redgrave’s reading superbly matches the tone & context of the story - which I found quite riveting!

Persevere, it's worth it!

I would urge anyone who reads this book not to give up (as I very nearly did)!
The start was so bogged down with explaining who everyone was and how they are connected to everyone else - maybe it is just me but I found it terribly confusing. To be honest, none of that was necessary to the enjoyment of the book, I finally just worked out who was married to who/who was a child or a sibling etc. The rest of the characters, who were either dead or didn't appear in the book to any great extent, didn't then matter. It was also irrelevant to the enjoyment that it was a follow-on book - I can't actually remember anything about the previous one although I have read it.
Apart from that issue, it's a great book with pleasant, interesting characters. Erica James is one of my "go to" authors and she didn't disappoint with this.

Different

Usually I cannot pug books by Erica James down but this one was different. It took me 30 to 40 chapters before I got into the story and even then I kept getting muddled up who all the characters were but that could be my age! I also did not like the character name Red St Clair as it sounded so corny and reminded me of a Mills & Boon novel. Having said all that in the end I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it

Slow starter!

Haven't quite finished this book and almost gave up! I am a big Erica James fan but was disappointed with the first part. There were lots of characters introduced very quickly and sometimes I lost track of their relationship s to each other. It felt as if so much time was spent introducing characters that nothing much was happening. I'm glad I persevered though as it turned out to be a good story.

Awful!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 August 2020Verified Purchase
Awful book and I usually enjoy Erica James. 16 characters introduced in the first 50 pages, far too much back story and too much jumping around, and far too many characters with amazing back stories.....just not believable. Many characters were just caricatures or cliches with no real depth. She writes about the 1960s like they’re living in grand houses in the 1930s. Very gushy on the romance side - more Barbara Cartland than Erica James. Pass the bucket. Disappointing and I gave up halfway through - life is too short for bad books and I really couldn’t be bothered with any of the characters.
