Living in the town of Nowra currently, I have always "known" about The Little Pebble Cult - but to read and experience it through Claire's eyes is just astounding that she and her children were able to escape that life. The strength is Claire's words and obvious determination to always put her children first is evident throughout the book - a Mother's true love. This book was a very emotional read for me as I felt for Claire for her "lost" childhood and teenage years and the ugliness that is an "unloved" and "unsupported" marriage. For a first time writer, Claire has moved me with her words.
This was an amazing account of bravery and also a sad testimony to the spiritual abuse that occurs within "Traditional" Catholic circles. The horrific mistreatment Claire endured from various "Traditional" Catholics, particularly in the Doomsday Cult led by "Little Pebble," is truly disturbing.
I am thankful for her courageous testimony, as by sharing her story, Claire is helping to shed light on the damaging fundamentalism that occurs in these Catholic sects, which is disastrously misaligned with the teachings of the regular Catholic Church. This book especially great for those who have experienced abuse within Catholic sects themselves as it is a confirmation of the massive problems that many have experienced within these (sometimes well intended) but frighteningly fundamentalist and destructive groups.
To anyone who is interested in the subject of cults and indoctrination, it is a fascinating and educational read.
I had not ever heard of the cult in Nowra, and I found it incredibly fascinating to read about Claires upbringing and life in the cult. It's so interesting to observe what can seem so delusional in the name of religious activity. I am a leader in a church, and it was definitely a reminder to ensure that our faith continues to be what brings freedom to mankind, and not control. Thank you for your candid retelling of what I am sure is at times a painful journey to reflect upon. You are an inspiration for having the courage to step out of that environment and hope for more!
