4.0 out of 5 stars A great way to make school more applicable at sea 18 February 2015

This is a great book to supplement either a self directed or off-the-shelf curriculum. My wife and I have done quite a bit of research on how to begin homeschooling our kids and we have chosen a self directed curriculum. While I don't believe this book replaces or was intended to replace curriculum it is a great "how to" plan, organize, maintain and succeed not only at homeschooling but integrate it into life on a boat. Nadine chooses topics related to travel, life at sea, nautical history and observations of marine life and astronomy that makes school applicable to the world children might find themselves blue water cruising. This book fills the gap between curriculum designed for home and that home being at sea.

I have been reading your book Lesson Plans Ahoy!! I absolutely love it. It makes teaching my kids seem so doable for me when we finally go offshore. I have been overwhelmed with the idea of 'boat' schooling but when I started reading your lesson plans I realized how much we already teach our kids as we live. Your lesson plans give me a foundation for delivering the info in a structured way!!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and talent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I was looking for! 30 April 2011

Yea! Finally a book that has lesson plans written by a sailing mom and teacher for sailing children! These are exactly the topics and hands on type of lessons I have wanted to have with us as we are traveling as a family. If you live on the water, the topics are ones you and your child have probably already wondered about--How does that fish really breathe under water, and why is the moon getting bigger and smaller? This book would be a great supplement to a traditional curriculum. Life on a boat gives students valuable general context, but these lessons make that learning concrete and fun.

I really appreciate that the lesson plans in this book are presented in a clear, conversational tone. I'm an English teacher, and I didn't need prior knowledge of moon phases or fish anatomy to have a great learning adventure with my child. The text's straightforward and interesting explanations do all that for you.

I especially liked that for each unit there are different adaptations for the age of my child so you can take tailor each topic to the skills and interest level of your child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lesson Plans Ahoy! 23 August 2010
By Sabina - Published on
In 2007-08, Nadine inspired us with her engaging and detailed recounts of her year-long sailing journey with her family, and now she's done it again with her latest new book, "Lesson Plans Ahoy!".
Each unit is easy to follow, thought-provoking and comprehensive providing all the research and knowledge needed to lead children through each unit with confidence and success. With specific examples of differentiated and age-appropriate lessons, the whole family can study the same topic together while each child is still challenged at her/his own academic and developmental level.
This book is a fantastic support to help make your dream come true of exploring the ocean with your children whether you're sailing, boating or at the seaside. Ahoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just for sailing parents, but many others, too! 13 August 2010
By Sharon, School Librarian - Published on
One does not have to sail the world to find this excellent educational resource book beneficial. The lesson plans, covering science, mathematics, humanities and even physical education, are creative, age appropriate and easy to follow. Take it along on any type of vacation, perfect for home-schooling parents or use it to keep young minds sharp and active during those long summer months away from the classroom. It is a wonderful book for anyone who is interested in enriching the learning experiences of their children. Further, both public and school libraries should consider having a copy available as a supplemental resource for parents.
