I liked it despite the fact that it had two of my pet hates in romance (a dead mate and love triangle/square).

Alpha Dominic Ashe, leader of Ash Valley, lost his mate 3 years ago, and since then has been on an isolated and destructive path to death. Pru Bristow, his dead mate's best friend is sent by Dom’s second Slay to get him back to the pack, as a latent it seems she is expendable to the pack and Slay (her lover).
Dom agrees to re-join the pack if Pru is able to shift and agrees to become his mate – he doesn’t expect her to be able to shift, but she does so they return to the pack mated. Whilst the chemistry between Pru and Dom was apparent, I didn’t truly feel/believe in their bond or relationship. I couldn’t buy their romance.
I hated Slay’s treatment of Pru and how long Pru put up with it, so the fact that towards the end he says he did want to mate her and there was no one else whilst they were together didn’t make me feel better. That being said there were moments that Pru’s strength and will were clear - she is a good character just needed a little more fleshing out.
Overall the characters for me needed more development and the worldbuilding was very light.
And true it starts very Beauty and the Beast meets ptsd but this bok is about self-affirmation and self-assertion... about learning to be worthy of self respect and the honour of your peers.
I love this book and the series is sublime. The world opens up into technological mysticism, kinda like the border of the Wall in Sabriel by Garth Nix.
But it is driven by characters and is one of those where you gleefully spot characters who will soooooo be getting their own books and you just can't wait.
Plus... the romance is steamy and sexy and fraught and intense.
You want this. Trust me.
Both the h and the H have previously had great loves, which I normally don't like in a story, but it worked well in TLK. Their relationships grows nicely as the story unfurls and it doesn't distract from the main plot, a war between the magical races.
I am looking forward to reading The Demon Prince and The Wolf Lord, which I understand is coming out soon too.
