This is my first read of Johansson’s and also the first book of short stories I’ve read in I can’t remember how long, so I was excited to see how it struck me.
For sake of simplicity, I will review each story with a line or two about how I felt before moving to the next one.
This book is comprised of six short stories:
This one was my favorite. Creepy, and who doesn’t like vampires? Loved it!
Jealousy and revenge can fuel cruel desires. This story proves that, yikes!
This one was really sad, and while it didn’t necessarily strike me as scary, there was a morbid vibe to it that I enjoyed.
Break of Day
Another vampire story, but I preferred Legacy. This one felt just a tad short.
The Long Goodbye
I liked the psych thriller kind of vibe this one had. Some people will do anything for love. Anything…
Family sure can be a pain, especially when you can’t stand them. Suppressed anger and resentment can make you do funny things…
All in all, this small book of short stories was a refreshing change of pace and was very entertaining. I can’t wait to read more from this author!
Since Ms Johansson is a talented Gothic fiction writer, I expected these stories to lean in that direction. They didn’t, but they did entertain me.
I particularly enjoyed “Upon Reflection.” I could tell something was up as Johansson slowly builds the tension. The payoff is excellent. It’s not a ghost story but a thing-in-the woods story. (Shivers!)
My other favorite story was “Killing Time.” There is nothing paranormal in this story, but it’s a good way to vicariously vent about the evils and ills one encounters in life.
In general, the collection is well-edited. I stumbled upon one typo, but that’s it. Otherwise it was a smooth read. Also, there was a slight optics error in water surface reflection, but no biggie.
Overall, a short but solid, dark collection.
