I found this book very easy to read. Great story and true to what happened in that erra. If it wasnt domextic violence as we call it today it was desertion by the men, good to get there satisfaction over with but fail their responsibility. I take my hat of to Rachel for being so strong minded and determind to raise her children to the best of her abilities. They all turned out to be well ecucated happy and rexponsible young adults. I would recomend this book to anyone who wants a short story. I would even go as far as saying it could be a great book to go into th school libaries for the children to understand how hard it was to have children in tnose days and the may understand that everthing is not easy to come by and you suvived on hard work and love. Great story

The story could be about many places and families living through that period. It should be read by those born after 1950 as so much has changed during these past 60 years. Deciphering some of the Scottish language is a challenge even although Rachel tried hard to get her children to give up slang and speak properly. It is a good description of human beings struggling to make good under very difficult circumstances.

Loved it! Sadness and happiness and was well written. Love any books in that era. Seems I have lived it. Hang on, I have lived it. LOL

Enjoyed both books, In a league of their own and In Class of there own. Being written as they speak added to the amusement of some situations. Also sad in part. True to the times.

This is a very heart felt book. It shows how through the toughest times that family stick together and be by each other's side. Absolutely loved this book, number two to In A Class Of Their Own. Loved the ending where Rachel finally gets a break.

Leith: a wonderful portrait of life on a common stair
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 August 2014Verified Purchase
Millie Gray's books charting the ups and downs, the apparently complicated but understandable relationships caused by living up a common stair in the Port of Leith from the early 1900s to the 1970s are a gripping read! Anyone who lived in Edinburgh and the Lothians at any time during these years will find nostalgia. The words used in common speech, now forgotten, abound. The names of streets and although numbers may not be identified they are recognised! The companies, now gone, Walkers Timber Yards, Rankins the fruitrers and the fishing boats with the great characters, the fishwives carrying the heavy creels on their backs. The books evoke a passed era where poverty was always in the background but strong family ties were also in evidence encompassing the generations.

I really enjoyed this story, which was so well written. The Campbells are a proud and gritty family who find themselves struggling financially when abandoned by the man of the house. They all look out for each other, and strive for a better life despite suffering many hardships along the way. This book however, is not all doom and gloom, there is a lot of humour too.

I have read the first book, it was good, this one I have only one complaint, it seemed to jump through the years quickly, mind you as you get older this seems to be true. The character are good and believable . As a Scot, I enjoyed seeing some of the sayings that are know dying out, things I would have said as a child

I found I had become one of the family whilst reading this book living and feeling the way that the family lived. Watching the bairns grow up just like your own family.
Didn't want the book to end, wanted to know how Hannah managed, did Sam make the grade and how Rachel's trip to Canada went. Well done Millie Gray and thank you.

I enjoyed finding out what happened to Rachel's children. It also gave a further insight into what life was like for the poor people in Leith. The book was easily read.
