First: don’t be put off by the terrible blurb that looks like a one-shot sales pitch of the kind one finds spammed on social media, promising a life-changing course at only $369, money back guaranteed.
Instead, once one gets past that (in my case, on account of it having been recommended to me directly) this definitely stands out from the crowd in the category of books on the topic.
Normally we get all the same key messages: lead from the front, give credit where it’s due, get feedback, and so forth. Of course this work has the same messages too, but they’re not repeated ad nauseam with barely credible office examples to fill out the pages.
Instead, the vast majority of the book is filled with the refined product of experience and consideration, an actual how-to manual with a lot of nuts-and-bolts aspects of making collaboration actually happen, instead of herding cats.
So, in short, a treasure trove of valuable information that will pay for itself manifold if applied in a team setting.
There is one aberration from the general excellence in this book, but it only lasts a page or two. In that section, we are advised of the importance of religious faith, strength from God (unflinching assumption of Christianity), and Biblical morals down to and including chastity. For me, this has no place whatsoever in a business book that’s otherwise based on the rational appraisal of empirical observations.
As we see from the author biography, Rawlins is an enthusiastic Christian for whom his religion is perhaps the largest part of his life, so to this end, perhaps we can be contented that he contained his proselytization of his personal religious beliefs to just a small section of the book. For this reason, I don’t knock off a star, which I surely would have done had it been present throughout.
That small part aside, though, this is a very well-informed book, well-written, and without the fluff that one tends to have to cut through in a lot of otherwise comparable works.
In short, I highly recommend it to anyone who would better understand both leadership and teamwork, and how to leverage such to produce industry-leading results.
