LAWLESS is not a cute western, it's brutal out there at the end of the nineteenth century in Wyoming Territory. It's obvious Ms. Reid carefully researched the era, but still I was somewhat taken aback by the violence, which is thankfully kept mostly off-page. Noah Kincaid is a really, really tough guy, the sort we seldom see in historical romances. Even the circumstances under which Noah and Ada Bancroft meet are trying: it happens during what appears to be a train robbery. Ada is a wonderful character, a real frontierswoman in spite of her posh education, but Noah! My goodness, he's as complex as they come! He's good to Ada, but he's just not civilised! I don't remember reading a romance where so many people die. By the way, the cover is great, it's how I imagined Noah.
While the romance is at the core of the story, LAWLESS is the action movie version of a romance novel. Noah and Ada's road to their happily-ever-after is fraught with peril, and not just for the damsel! It's a very realistic romance, and although I found Noah a bit scary at times, I would have been grateful to have him on my side under the circumstances. LAWLESS is an absorbing story, just don't expect a rainbows-and-unicorns historical western romance, it was a rough world out there.
