Product Description

Excellent series launch ... What follows is classic Connelly: a master class of LAPD internal politics and culture, good old-fashioned detective work, and state-of-the-art forensic science - plus a protagonist who's smart, relentless, and reflective ... once again, he delivers.' - starred review in Publishers Weekly

Los Angeles can be a dangerous city - never more so than in the dead of night.

Renee Ballard works the night shift at the LAPD in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor.

But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting. Ballard is determined not to give up at dawn. Against orders and her own partner's wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night.

As the cases entwine, they pull her closer to her own demons and the reason she won't give up her job - no matter what the department throws at her.

Connelly has another protagonist for his police procedural novels. Renee Ballard is a fitting character to follow on from Bosch. Like Bosch, she is on the outers in the LAPD but persists chasing her cases. I liked the perspective of a female cop. It adds another layer to the character and the obstacles she has to overcome to do her job. A good read.

Although Harry Bosch is a favourite character, Renee Ballard still brings interest to the plot of her case, with its twist and turns, that even a dedicated crime tragic like myself didn't predict the outcome !

The author has nailed it again. A dash of Kiz Ryder but with a whole new depth and level. I can't wait for more of this series.

Michael Connelly is a great writer. Renee Ballard, his new detective confirms that once again.

It would be too easy to simply compare Ballard to Bosch. A loner at war with the establishment. But dedicated to the dead no matter who they are. We treat them all or we don't treat any.

Michael is subtle so we have totally believable cop who is dogged, intuitive and with a lot of baggage. Her punishment for going against the boys club code is night patrol. Then in one night there is credit card theft, almost deadly assault and a multiple homicide. She doggedly pursues the first two but is warned off the other. Like that's going to stop her. But who are her friends and who is out to destroy her.

Michael drags you into the story using a narrative first person style. You see the clues as Ballard sees them. You follow the twists. You feel the disappointments. While the story could be complicated Michael keeps it straightforward. There are no surprise Agatha Christie moments. There is build of tension and the final twists are unexpected.

Michael Connelly fans won't be disappointed. Renee is a detective first and so Michael doesn't need to set up Renee as a type of person and then have to fit the story to suit. I look forward to a new series of well written police stories. Good one Michael.

4.5 stars for this first book in Connelly's new series of police procedurals. It started a bit slow - there is pretty much a whole new cast of characters to get to know. By about a third of the way through, it felt like it was dragging a bit so I took a break from reading it. But I have faith in Connelly's writing skills so I didn't give up altogether. And once I took the book up again, it rapidly picked up pace and got much better.

Some very dramatic events occurred, and the plot twists and turns started to become more interesting. All of a sudden I was racing through the book, and I finished the last two thirds pretty quickly. I ended up really liking it. The plotting, as always, was tight and clever, with a couple of red herrings and a satisfying ending.

I like the new heroine, Renee Ballard. She's interesting and smart, and lives in the real world. The cast of secondary characters is also well done. I'm happy to read future books in this series.
