The problem the author fails to overcome, though, is that a book - like a film - needs to make the reader interested and invested in the characters. It is their actions - and interactions - that MUST carry the story along and, to this end, mere two dimensional ciphers are always going to fail. Similarly, it is not sufficient to leap from one moment of crisis to the next. A sense of " timing" - you might want to call it the art of editing - is required.
I am not saying it is a bad book -there were parts that really grabbed my attention - but
