The plot, if you could call it that, made no real sense and the ending even less, and the characters left a lot to be desired, but this book had something. What, I’m not sure, but something. The constant boozing was kind of irritating too but the book kept me reading. Don’t think I’ll bother with the rest of the series though.

This isn't your typical predictable detective story. The novel begins with the protagonist, not so much a detective but a man who finds missing people for money, chasing an alcoholic writer across America. But where it ends is far above and beyond the story's humble beginnings. The book is filled with a substantailly satisfying set of intriguing characters and builds a brilliant journey through mystery, violence, and as the blurb puts so well some of America's sleaziest nightmares. I enjoyed the entirety of this novel, my only criticism is that the final event of the story feels quite abrupt and cheats the reader of the satisfaction they feel after the climax, although perhaps this is to make the reader feel the same as the protagonist, don't expect a happy ending (considering the genre that's a bit naive anyway), but know that it's a meaningful one.

Just finished and I love this book - it's very, very good. As has been said before there are obvious comparisons with Chandler and when that's done well it's brilliant but so often lesser writers can drift into cliche. Thankfully Crumley does an excellent job. This is one of the few books where I've highlighted lines and passages because they are so good. Anyone with a love of hard boiled noir should relish this - it's everything you'll want it to be.

I'm not typically one to post reviews, but Crumley is one of the finest writers I have encountered in any genre. As a crime novel, the story here is decent, but the real attractions are Crumley's terrific prose, littered with memorable turns of phrase and the distinctive, voice of Sughrue, simultaneously world-weary and thirsty for excess. Incredibly readable and enjoyable.
