Tessa Gratton is a masterful writer. Her prose sings, her characters are complex (both flawed and wonderfully heroic), and her creative interpretation of Henry IV part 1 is utterly captivating. She returns us to a familiar world, introduced in QUEENS OF INNIS LEAR, but the story and characters are fresh and new. She continues to assess some of the themes present in INNIS LEAR, notably nature, magic, rebellion against patriarchal structures, as well as expanding queer interpretations of the original play. Though the setting, plot, and action are top notch, it was truly her interpretation of the characters that held my heart.
The three woman leading this novel, Hal, Hotpsur, and Mora, are beautifully different and complex in their own ways. Their traits take into account the original material, but also expand on it as Gratton deepens the characters' connections with each other as well as the lands they love. Hal and Hotspur made my heart flutter. I was so enraptured by their tumultuous relationship, bouncing from love to hate and back but always sparking with enormous passion. When Hal tells Hotspur: “What if I love you so well it changes the very landscape of our world?” I think I melted into a puddle. And Mora's strength of will, determination, and bravery was next level.
The story is complex, layered, and so full of marvelous characters I didn't want to say goodbye to. I can't sing my praises of this novel, and really all of Gratton's work, enough. She is a masterful writer. I almost felt drunk off the beauty and elegance in her descriptive prose. It sings.
Bottom line: Don't miss LADY HOTSPUR! (and if you haven't read QUEENS OF INNIS LEAR, pick up a copy of that too!)
