I have both the 3LP and 4CD sets. Both are great collections and wonderfully packaged and I believe the LP set is the better introduction to the band
The CD collection has 3 CD discs providing a comprehensive round-up of all their hits and fan favorites covering a 30 year career, with a few deeper cuts thrown in for good measure. Each disc covers a decade of music and is presented in chronological order (more-or-less). The fourth disc is a DVD of live performances from various concerts and TV shows around the world, with most from the 90's and 00's.
This 4CD set is a good addition for someone who has most of the Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds albums already since there are some alternate versions of a few tracks (taken from the original recording sessions) and the accompanying 255 page hardback book is treasure-trove of photographs and interesting vignettes.
The LP set works better as a compilation for someone wanting an introduction to the band or for any fan wanting to just play the hits. There are far fewer songs and they are not in chronological order, instead each side presents an interesting collage of the band's output across the years. There is no accompanying book with this set, but the fold-out triple fold cover contains some nice photos of the band members. That cover is thick, matte card and the black vinyl is quality 180g and seems to be well pressed as my copy is free from any pops or crackles.
For anyone new to the band this LP set is a better place to start (provided you have a turntable ... and you really, really should have a turntable) and then if you want to dig deeper into the great work of the band - buy their albums.
