This year is another fun one with lots of builds and five minifigures (this does not include the robot or the snowman). Last year there were six but I am okay with one less as some of the builds are going to be lots of fun. The box refers to three other Lego kits that potentially coordinate with the toys in the calendar. Those kits are all really expensive, so if you are looking at this for a child and want something to go with it, try looking at some of the smaller kits that are available.
The product description shows a breakout of the actual items included. I opened my set to verify that each window had a bag (I've had a kit miss one before.) I've also had pieces missing or a bag swapped out. Lego is great at replacing whatever is necessary if yo contact them right away.
In addition to this set, one of my other favorites in Lego is to put together Christmas dioramas with the special winter scene sets and the City Advent calendars. I have a traditional train but may want to do the Harry Potter version this year. I'm starting to add these around my modular building sets to have an entire town. Legos are simply a lot of fun to play with and my grandchildren are having a blast with them. At their house, they've taken over the dining room as their Lego build room and they are only almost five and two years old.
Be sure not to throw away the box as it is part of the fun. This year the box opens up an area for vehicles to play. There is a monster truck track, a helicopter landing pad, a race car straight track and a view from space. While the area is not coordinated together, it should prove lots of fun for kids to play with each of the elements in the set.
I've updated my initial review as I've communicated with Lego support. Apparently this is the "new approach" by Lego. Meaning take everything that you were used to in years past and just change it with the Friends set. I don't know if "Friends" cost more to make than bricks, but you won't find any "Friends" in this set. The idea of "play" also seems to be lost on this set as you are really just making ornaments.
I order these in September so that I have them for the kids. I would have returned it, but of course I'm way outside of the return window. If you like the Friends sets from years past, you might be disappointed. Of course, if you want to make ornaments for the tree - you might love it!
This really should just be called the Lego Ornament Set. You may have fun putting them together, but it is not at all like the sets of years past. I could live with that, except that it is marketed besides the other Advent Calendars and appears to be the only one to receive this new approach.
Sorry - don't mean to be a HumBug - just not what we were expecting and clearly Lego had absolutely no intent of losing potential buyers by marketing the product for what it really is - "NOT Lego Friends".
I get this advent calendar for my daughter every year. This is the first year I can recall (and I may be wrong) where it doesn't come with a minifig/Friend. Sure she has tons of minifigs that she can use with these things, but opening the minifig on day 1 and then using it with the rest of the set is one of her favorite parts. I suspect she's going to be a little disappointed. I am disappointed with LEGO's decision to not include a figurine in this set.
Back then I called and complained to Lego and the rep said that they were receiving a lot of complaints. I called again this year and the rep sent me a "Santa" to placate me. Well, it's a Santa body and hat but Geldolf hair. The Santa hat won't fit on the head.
I'll be especially careful next year.
