4.0 out of 5 stars Fun build, not convinced by the app
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 July 2021
This is a new type of set by Lego, designed to be used with one of their apps to make interactive music videos, starring Lego minifigures alongside you and your friends. This is one of the bigger sets so it is playable without using the app functionality. It comes with three minifigures (all rock star themed – shark, mermaid, octopus) and a pirate ship for them to perform on. I love the bright colours that come with this pirate ship, it makes it different to all the other pirate ships that lego offer. I love the clever way the bricks are used to make things like a hook symbol, pirate skull and spaces for the performers.
The set also comes with a mini stage like you get with the smaller carry sets and has 17 2*2 Lego tiles, each different colours with pictures on them- Lego call these Beatbits. You chose which of these Beatbits to use for each video and these control which added special effects appear in the video.
I enjoyed the build, it was an easy build and took a couple of hours.
I am not a fan of the vidiyo app and it’s functionality. Be aware that you should check your phone compatibility if you are choosing this for the interactivity. I have a Samsung S7 and it worked with that.
Once in the app you scan your minifigure to add them as a bandmate. You put your bandmate in their stage. You can decorate the flaps on the side of the mini stage with up to 12 Beatbit tiles. You then scan the stage- we had trouble here- we found that it never scanned all our beatbits, limiting the special effects we could use in the video. When left to use the app themselves my 9-year-old kept getting ‘Oops, bandmate not recognised’ and became increasingly frustrated. Each Beatbit corresponds to a special effect such as a cat flying across the screen, a kaleidoscope effect of an instrument for the minifigure bandmate to play. Each Beatbit you use does require you to download the extra effect- using data and phone space. The app has multiple music tracks you can choose to make you video to- these do not need to be downloaded.
We couldn’t work out how to share the video we made with anyone outside the Vidiyo community- this is a downside for us. Our boys are 7 and 9 and want to share the video with their direct friends and family rather than to a wider social media audience.
As huge Lego fans we were really disappointed with the app, have deleted it already and wont be getting any other small vidiyo sets.
As a pirate ship and for playing I enjoyed the build, it has good swooshability and playability. I like it for that aspect and am sure lots of others will too. This will depend what you are looking for with your experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun with or without the video
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 19 July 2021
This looked really complicated at first glance but turned out to be an enjoyable and satisfying build. It's a good size when finished. It's big enough to play with but doesn't take up too much room on your shelf.

I particularly like the fold out section at the back which is like a pizza bar, the mermaid, the skull and the rare coral colour on the spinners.

There is a separate beatbits stand which looks a bit like a comic book shop and we may well use it as that in our play but each tile will help create a special effect in the video.

The mermaid violinist, squid drummer and shark guitarist minifigures are really unusual and appealing. A punk pirate ship is fun enough to play with on its own, never mind making music videos with it. But it’s nice to have that option and soon we tried it. The app was quick to install but then a bit slow loading the first time

It's not something you would use every time you play with the playset. I was a bit confused by choosing a mini figure to perform who appeared during the recording but then didn't appear in the playback but I could have missed something there. Choosing a band name from all the many, silly choices was amusing. When you point your device at the tiles behind the shark it creates different effects like the squid breakdancing, black and white view or paint balls being thrown.

Choose your background carefully as it will show. We used a blue sofa to be like the sea behind the pirate ship.

You can't take screenshots in the app due to licensing, but you can play your recordings back over and over and pause them.

Fun for a change but not essential to this already unusual and entertaining playset.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ahoy Matey!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 30 June 2021
This was my last build of the current range of Lego Vidiyo sets and I definitely saved the best for last. This is such a good looking piece of kit that I don't really know where to start with reviewing it. I am going to give it a go though.

First off it comes with three minifigures and three unique beatbits; there are also 14 random beatbits included. So plenty of options to add soun ds, dance moves and light effects in the app. The figures are wonderfully detailed with complicated prints on the torsos and legs. The figures in this set are:

Shark Guitarist
Mermaid Violinist
Squid Drummer

There is just something about plopping a mohawk on a shark that made my day!

The build itself is fairly standard Lego fare and is clearly explained in the build booklet supplied. The colour choices on the ship really pop against the brown used for the hull and make it look exciting. The plaque with the brick built hook on it that sits behind the drum kit is just a wonderful piece of detailing that just elevates this set.

Like the other stages you can spin the speakers to show a different colour combination that ties in with one of the top box icons. The two icons are a shark and a skull and I genuinely cannot decide which one is my favourite theming for the ship. The use of an oyster shell piece as a figurehead is a stroke of genius as it almost looks dredged up from the sea.

Throw in a small backstage area with bottles of grog and there is plenty going on here. This is aestheticvally spot on and it does look really good on display as well as for play use. Although very definitely a stage in design there are play options with this set that make it something that little bit different to your usual brick builds.

I have not downloaded the Vidiyo App and I am actually not likely to. I know that is what they are designed for but I will admit I got these more for the Minifigures than for any interest in making music videos through the App. This does make the set seem expensive, however, if you are going to be using the Vidiyo App then you have to factor in the actual licensing costs to Universal and their Artists that make the App possible by uploading their back catalogue on there.

Overall this is a superb addition to the Vidiyo theme and well worth considering even if you will not be using the app.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Lego, poor app.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 July 2021
The Lego build Kita itself is the usual good Lego quality.

The instructions are easy to follow and everything is bagged up in stages ready for as you go along.

I did find that some of the contrast on the photo guide was a bit dark and it took me a few seconds to figure out piece placement on some of the darker colours.

But it looks great, the boat is very much set up as a stage and comes with three musicians ready to perform.

It even has a functional canon on the front and a hang out area at the rear of the ship. There are numerous items that can be spun around to change the view too.

On its own this is a great, funky piece of Lego.

This is designed to be used with an app though, and that is it's downfall.

I found the app very slow, before you even start it has a massive update which seems to take forever, and every time you add a character you have to download them. There is a lot of wait time when using the app.

When it works, you scan your character some tiles around it, the tiles give you extra functions when creating your music video.
After the character is scanned it shows on your phone screen and puts on a show for you whilst you change the scene, it is fun.

If the app is improved this would easily be 5 stars and it is still fun without using it.

First impressions of this were great, it definitely looks the part and would be an impressive gift to give any Lego fan!

The private ship was fun to make and we found the instructions really easy to understand and follow which was good. I think once built the ship alone is fun enough so to also have the Beatbits stage to add the music videos and virtual reality element was brilliant. To use it you need to download the “Lego Vidiyo” app on your phone or tablet which was easy to do and free to download on the Apple App store. It actually lets you test out the app without scanning any of the pieces and using their free band member so if you aren’t sure if you want to get it you could download it and have a play to see what you make of it. Obviously if you get the set you can do a lot more with the app by scanning the figures or stage in. There is so much to do on there I feel like we’ve only scratched the surface with it which is great as I can tell it’s going to provide a lot of entertainment, although I can see myself being forced to watch a lot of shows in future now lol

Overall if you can’t already tell, I think this is brilliant and would definitely recommend it! 5 stars from us!
