This was a fun and sweet read. I debated heavily as to whether to round up or down on this, but in the end it was just too short and rushed to round it up.
Zephyr is a great character - the chapters from his POV show him for the naive and confused dragon that he is, operating on instinct. He did imprint on Gawain very quickly, but that could be expected from the first non-mage to show him kindness, and to display a serene and kind soul (Zephyr's magic allowed him to see auras). Gawain himself was my problem - I didn't understand his rushed connection with Zephyr. Even when in his human form, Zephyr was still very much a dragon and the almost childlike wonder he had made it hard to see him as an adult.
I also found it strange and too smooth that there was no revulsion from anyone about this coupling. We were told time and time again Dragons haven't been seen for over a century, and yet Gawain is instantly accepting, and entered into a sexual relationship with one within a day of them meeting, but with no apparently mate bond or magical pull. It just seemed too rushed and light on detail.
I did like the fact the gender equality seemed normal in this world - there is an unmarried female Queen holding the throne, female Knights and Pages, etc. I also liked that no-one blinked an eye at 2 other male Knights being in a relationship.
I'm torn between wanting to read more, and being a little put off by the relationship between Gawain and Zephyr. It wasn't a normal shifter romance where the shifter spends a lot of time in human form. Zephyr has only known his dragon form, and while intelligent, he is still very much not human, despite temporarily assuming human form. Gawain professed that he loves Zephyr despite his form, but that if they wanted to get intimate that Zephyr would have to assume human form. I like that they have a connection like that, but there is also something about it that doesn't sit quite right with me. I think this might have been alleviated if the story was longer and more depth provided.
