I have oretty much given up trying to actually cut a cake with this, though I sometimes use it to score the edge to create a level line, to then cut with a knife!
It may just be that i never found the right technique; clearly you can't just pull it through the cake like a cheese knife, you have to saw back and forth, as with a serrated knife. But with anything larger than a 7-8" cake there is simply not much room to slide it back and forth. Additionally the 'feet' do not slide well; if holding it by the top you end up with the top tilting in the direction of movement, so that it does not create the level cut hoped for. To counter this I tried holding it by the sides, but then rather than slice through the cake it just pushed the cake; i ended up trying to slice 'towards' myself, using the front of my body to stop the cake sliding off the wroktop! I think I need at last 3 hands to use it effectively!
It slices very light sponge cakes, but won't do anything denser. Rich chocolate cakes, carrot cakes etc just won't slice- they clog up the tiny serrations.
