MISSION: proceed to Alnath II. Vulcan ship T'pau found with all hands dead. Klingon ship in vicinity. Andorian archeological crew on-site sending distress signal.
OVERVIEW: on Alnath II there's an alien "jewel" emanating some type of force which works on one's psyche uncovering unreconciled desires and then helps to attain them. The problem is that chasing after one's selfish interests quickly erodes "the greater good" of one's chosen group. Right? :-) indeed.
And what of the Vulcans on the T'pao? Well they got what they'd prepared for and wanted all of their lives. Happy trails fellas.
OPINION: Without the Enterprise, Star Trek is NOT. Since most of the action in this book takes place on-board, this book is automatically on my top shelf. I enjoy "being on-board" with TOS' characters while reading. If you do also, then this is one for you. It's well written. I can hear the computerized sounds of the bridge, the turbolift doors opening and closing, Uhura programming her board, the phasers and photon torpedoes firing, sickbay bed monitors... well, you know. If you're like me, you'll never get tired of those background sounds while the characters you love deal with life and death issues in space.
And so, if you're one of us, this book is for you. Peace and long life.
