Product Description

Melinda Starling doesn’t let ladylike behavior get in the way of true love. She’s secretly assisting in an elopement . . . until she’s tossed into the waiting coach and driven away by a notorious rake.

Miles Warren, Lord Garrison, comes from a family of libertines, and he’s the worst of them all—or so society believes. When Miles helps a friend to run away with an heiress, it’s an entertaining way to revenge himself on one of the gossips who slandered him.

Except that he drives off with the wrong woman . . . and as if that wasn’t scandalous enough, he can’t resist stealing a kiss.

Good light reading for a Regency romance, quite enjoyable, not as raunchy some I have read. It too much explicit sex

The plot is good and i like both the hero and heroine. Melinda is intelligent and despite her upbringing by her hateful grandmother, she grew to be a compassionate woman. And Miles, despite being known as a rake, isn't all that rakish. His past made him wary for love, but not totally immune.

This book should have been really good, but i can't rate it highly because i found some things not particularly to my liking. The hero's former love object betrayed him. Okay, happens all the time. But i didn't like the way the author writes about how she did it with 3 footmen, in the hero's house, with the hero's footmen, while the hero endeavours to save her from ruin and arranges to quickly marry her. That's stretched out too far for me. The hero, for his part, is not a saint either. Rakes generally are not, but our hero also participated in "orgies", plural, with his cousin Colin, and this is being gossiped around until it reached the heroine's ears too. Argh! At least the author did not write this in graphic colours, but still, i find these details really poor. There are also side plots that just did not make sense, like when Colin went to the library and left with a parcel. Seems very unlikely for him, so what was that for? The author never elaborated. Just some more word count.

The dialogues and internal musings are rather flat as well. They didn't make me feel the romance or love development, just lust. It could have been so much better.

There was too much mistrust and secrecy, especially on the hero's part. It just dragged on too long. Well, it made the book longer of course, but once they both got to what was supposed to be a monumental part of the story, their confessions, i was disappointed for they were rather juvenile and sounded like the characters were reading their confessions from an autocue, with small reactions from the other here and there. I didn't feel any deep feelings or emotions that usually stems at such moments. I guess i expected too much. Very disappointed.

What easily could have been a novel that fell into a cliche forced marriage trope with arguing spouses, instead became an interesting surprising novel of trust and commitment. To Kiss A Rake has two very likable leads who are trying their best to become better people after they find themselves in a hasty marriage.

Miles Warren, Lord Garrison never wanted to marry. He was badly hurt by his former fiance and he has some big issues with trust. He has garnered a rather unsavory reputation amongst the ton due both to his own behavior and some unfounded rumors.

Melinda Starling is a gem of a heroine, fiercely loyal, compassionate and generous. She can be a bit impulsive. She has a mean spirited grandmother and she has somehow managed to keep a kind spirit regardless of her grandmothers ugly words.

These two people meet under strange circumstances, helping their friends elope but things go awry and the two find themselves in a situation that calls upon them to marry. Neither is ecstatic about the prospect. Melinda wanted to marry for love and her hopes are dashed. Both though plan on being faithful committed spouses. From the beginning of their marriage they can be refreshing honesty (like Melinda being blunt about her courses) yet there are secrets that both are keeping from the other, secrets which could destroy their budding relationship.

While they are learning to cope as husband and wife they are also discovering their own emotional awakening, especially Miles who has long buried his feelings. He smartly talks himself out of a lot of doubt about Melinda and her actions. His distrust is so much a part of him that it takes a concerted effort to believe in someone again.

This is a very sweet romantic story with two leads who are determined to make the best out of a bad situation. The most admirable character by far though is Melinda who is intrepid and also incredibly kind. I liked her from the start.

To Kiss A Rake by Barbara Monajem was a perfect read for a rainy Saturday. The story was not particularly unique, but it was well written and edited. The characters had different personalities that made up a good mixture of good, bad and ugly. I'm don't really enjoy too much angst, but within the plot of this book it was necessary. I really liked Melinda. She was kind and sincere in her well-meaning intentions, even if her efforts ended up as madcap adventures. I was a little slower to warm-up to Miles. He was awful stuffy for a true rake, but then again was he really a true rake? In the end his true personality won me over. Both Melinda and Miles had good reasons to guard their hearts, but of course Cupid's arrow always wings true.

Overall this was an enjoyable and pretty clean read. The marital passion was tempered and tasteful. On a side note, as with many historical romances, the social norms can be disturbing. This story included reminders of how women and children were treated in past centuries. But come to think of it, there many places in this century were mistreatment still exists.

It started out well, i appreciated the plot and the characterisation. But somehow, despite the right ingredients, i felt it miss something - perhaps that spark that feels us readers with wamrth when we read beautiful dialogue, see that beautiful scene pictured by the author. I will check out her other writings to give her fair ratings across the board.
5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely Regency Romance 29 August 2016

Sigh, who doesn't love the idea of that knight in shining armor coming to sweep us off our feet and put an end to all our worries and problems? That is the role of the Regency Romance and some do it better than others. I must say that Barbara Monajem is at the top of the genre. The writing is great, the characters three dimensional as well as believable and I didn't spot any obvious anachronisms. I enjoyed this book immensely and recommend it to all of us closet romanticists who wish it could happen to us. I will definitely be reading more of Ms. Monajem's work!
