This is a perfect Christmas present, as well as a long-term treasure: a group of very different women writers, some of them most eminent (eg Joan Bakewell, Sally Vickers), have been commissioned to write a short story that has its roots in the small historic Warwickshire village where the excellent, unique Hosking Houses Trust is based. (The Trust provides a free cottage for women writers who need its special environment to progress or complete works for publication). Margaret Drabble gives a thoughtful introduction to pull together the diversity that follows. This is a unique volume full of interest, delight and imaginative ideas that will remain with the reader long after they turn the last page. A most attractive and absorbing volume to keep and return to.
