It not only kept me excited with sea battles but. How a sailing vessel has to be sailed, things that other books of this nature do not go into, such as life below decks etc.
I can imagine being on board next to Alan Lewrie as he gives orders to shorten sail.
I shall miss these books and hope that this is not the last we hear of "ram cat Lewrie".
I've read a lot of this kind of stuff, and these have been very enjoyable and page turning up to a point. Mind, a series of 20 books demands a lot from an audience!
I felt the discipline of plots and characters loosened as the author got carried away and a bit silly as the books progressed.
Book 12 was my Waterloo with Creole pirates and too much American being my last straw.
I was still interested enough to skip to book 20 though to see how things turned out which on the whole I enjoyed.
The onshore action adventures were a bit Hornblower, but I was still concerned for the safety of our Captain in the final chapters and very much wanted a happy ending.
Over all, very enjoyable and I'll likely struggle to get so quickly hooked when I next search the British seas for an adventure.
