Lady Penelope Smythe-Everton is ill-suited to the life of a gentleman’s daughter in mid-19th-century England. She’s independent, courageous, adventurous in the extreme, and not a particularly good risk on the marriage market. After a brush with death in the tropics, she returns to London with a rather large egg, which hatches to reveal a bipedal lizard she christens "Rex." Her life—and that of her dearest friend, solicitor John Maguire—is about to change in ways neither of them can possibly imagine.

For me, this was a wonderful, if bittersweet, tale from out of a world like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's, where some dinosaurs survived somewhere and occasionally interact with humans. It starts with an egg and essentially spans the life of the dinosaur with its human keepers. The presentation of the Victorian setting and a somewhat novel take on the therapod's instincts are convincing, especially with respect to the kinds of bonding that take place. One is left with a smile and a tear. Enjoy.

I was looking for a brief diversion and this beautifully written period short was just the thing. I'm still smiling. Please, ma'am, can I have some more?
