Product Description

When Kate Davidson gets an offer to teach yoga classes at the Elysian Springs resort, she jumps at the opportunity—even if it means enduring the wedding ceremony of the center’s two caretakers. But avoiding the M-word turns out to be the least of Kate’s problems when a wedding guest is found floating face-down in the resort’s hot tub, shortly after a loud, public fight with Kate.

The police pick Kate as their number-one suspect, so she teams up with her boyfriend Michael, best friend Rene, and German shepherd sidekick Bella to find the real killer. They must solve the crime before the police arrest Kate, or her next gig may last a lifetime—behind bars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Killer Read! 18 December 2015

Kate Davidson is a yoga teacher with some definite commitment issues. This time around Kate, her boyfriend Michael, her best friend Renee & her husband Sam, & Kate's dog Bella head out to an Eco friendly spa on an island near Seattle. They are there because Kate has decided to take a temporary job as a yoga instructor for wedding guests at the resort & her friends could have a relaxing vacation. Unfortunately they are all stuck together in one small cabin that is not anywhere near as luxurious as it was advertised. Soon we have the death of a very unlikable & obnoxious character. As Kate is found standing over the recently deceased woman she is arrested for murder. This forces Kate to go into sleuthing mode. The plot twists & turns as Kate tries to untangle all the clues to find the real murderer. She is also dealing with her conflicting feelings about Michael & their burgeoning relationship. I really enjoyed this book finding it hard to put down until all was resolved at the end - a very satisfying conclusion btw!

5.0 out of 5 stars Kate and Bella are Back! Hurray! 4 January 2015

Really good. Love her writing. Tracy Weber again brings in a strong plot and outstanding cast of characters. When Kate and Michael travel to an eco-friendly island retreat as a working vacation, things naturally do not turn out quite the way they expected. Kate is on edge fearing that Michael is ready to ask the big question and she is not ready to make a commitment: in fact, she is not sure she will ever be ready, but she doesn’t want to lose him. Then there’s that thing about the cabin sleeping four; her best friend is really more of the satin sheets than the sleeper sofa kind of person. Of course, there is the murder, one for which Kate is the main suspect.

Ms Weber creates realistic fears, concerns and friendships, and she handles her character feelings with a delightful finesse.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yoga, Spa Retreat, Dogs, and Wedding Drama. A Very Entertaining Sequel 18 June 2017

A Killer Retreat is book 2 of a Downward Dog Mystery by Tracy Weber. We join Kate Davidson, her boyfriend Michael, and beloved German Shepherd-Bella on a work vacation trip to Elysian Springs Resort. When Kate has agrees to teach yoga to a wedding party all kinds of trouble ensues. Some of the family members of the wedding party do not seem to be able to be around one another without arguing and somehow Kate get pulled into their drama. When a body is found, Kate becomes suspect number one. Can Kate clear her name, as she deals with Bella health problems, her relationship with Michael, and all the other drama that seems to surround her?

I love how Mrs. Weber make Kate more realistic by giving her a quick temper, commitment phobias, and unconditional love for her dog-Bella. I definitely can relate to Kate’s quick temper or what seems as quick but I feel like she and I are alike. I feel that we take in a lot of stress and frustrations and it builds up. So when she loses her temper it seems quick. I know this sounds like a strange trait for a yoga instructor but I feel it makes her more human. I also can relate to going to extra mile to take care of a sick animal, as I am an animal lover and have taken care of my fair share of sick pets over the years. I also enjoyed learning a little more about yoga as this is something I keep meaning to try.

In addition to Kate and Bella being great characters, all the secondary characters are hilarious with their family drama. You can just see how crazy this wedding party is as narrator Anne James brings the characters to life. She does a fabulous job with the accents and comedic timing. She seems to be a natural storyteller.

Mrs. Weber has another hit on her hands with this cozy mysteries. The book has great pace, wonderful characters, no bad language, and no graphic sex or violence. I would definitely recommend this book. I have read books 1 and 3 in this series and look forward to more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!! 13 February 2016

I so enjoyed Tracy Weber’s book, Killer Retreat. The mystery storyline had me guessing until the end. Stories with dogs always get me hooked, and I loved reading about the German shepherd, Bella’s, antics and mannerisms. The interactions between the characters had me laughing, frustrated (in a good way), and invested in what was going to happen to them. Tracy Weber weaved information about yoga, mystery, and everyday life in this fast-paced, easy-to-read book. I felt transported to Orcas Island. The story provided subtle life lessons that made me pause and think about how I could incorporate those lessons into my own life. I have enjoyed Tracy Weber’s first two books and am looking forward to reading the third installment, Karma’s a Killer. I appreciate Tracy Weber’s writing style and how she keeps it light, fresh, interesting, and completely enjoyable!!! Keep the books coming.
3.0 out of 5 stars Yoga, dogs, and murder 20 July 2017

3.5 stars overall

A KILLER RETREAT, the second book in the Downward Dog mystery series finds yoga instructor Kate, along with her dog Bella and boyfriend Michael, spending the week at an island retreat where Kate hopes to combine her teaching duties with a little R&R. Officially, Kate is there to teach the retreat owner’s wedding guests, but she finds herself more distracted by her best friend Renee’s illness, missed phone calls from her yoga studio back home, her relationship hang-ups with Michael, and encountering the bride Emma’s step-mother Monica. Of course, trouble arises when Monica is found strangled, and Kate becomes the prime suspect.

Overall, I give the book itself three and a half stars, which means I like it. That said, I confess that I do not particularly like any of the characters, with the exception of Bella, very much. Kate is a contradiction; she is supposed to be a calm and collected yogi, but she struggles with a hot temper. Her relationship issues are wearing thin two books into the series, and I do not think I would put up with her if I were Michael. I never warmed up to Renee, and I feel like the thread concerning her carried on for far too long. Any reader can see what is “wrong” with her from the moment she enters the story. None of the characters central to this book are very appealing. Monica is so over-the-top that I was glad that she met her end. The mystery itself is predictable, though one twist at the end made it worthwhile. Also, the murder does not occur until several chapters into the book, and I feel it took too long to get to that point.

As I mentioned above, this is my first experience listening to an audio book so I did not have any real expectations. Narrator Anne James does a good job with various female characters’ voices, but the men’s are lacking. She just cannot drop the pitch of her voice enough to be believable. She does convincingly read the story, for the most part. Her diction is clear and understandable, and some of the accents, particularly Monica’s, seem spot on. I give the audio portion three stars.

I will continue reading the Downward Dog series but am not persuaded that audio books are the way to go – for me. I recommend A KILLER RETREAT to Ms. Weber’s fans and to readers who enjoy the inclusion of pets in their cozy mysteries.
