This was an ok read - not brilliant, but readable enough. Not a lot I can say about it - just that I finished it. If you want to read a cosy mystery - there are better storytellers out there. Don't think I'll bother with any more in the series.
I enjoyed this book. I liked the heroine and her friends. I thought the plot held up well, and I didn't guess the perp; before the end. However, it was just that...like. I didn't go overboard with enthusiasm and feel I couldn't wait for the second book. I'll certainly read the second book and probably enjoy it if it's like the first. There is one point that niggled me. It's only a small part of the whole book, but I found it irritating. Everytime the heroine goes anywhere or meets anyone, we get a detailed description of their clothing. Once or twice is fine, but not cosistently throughout the book.
This story would have benefited by some severe editing, imo. It could have been cut in half and still told the entire story, possibly in a more entertaining way. I don't mind filler material, but I do mind boring filler material. Hearing all the tedious talk about the protagonists boring occupation and even more boring wardrobe (featuring all things, 'taupe,' was trying.) I had to force myself to keep reading, and that is never a good sign. In addition, the main character never seems to stop eating. I don't know what it is with some authors - but there is waaayy too much emphasis on food and snacking. To me, it's lazy writing. Lastly, some inconsistencies might be overlooked, but a character who is described as being in her 'early seventies' but is also described as celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary can not be overlooked. How does an author let that stand? Anyway, perhaps the series improves with time, but I'm sorry that I can't recommend it.

The “Killer Read” is the first book in the Ashton Corners Book Club “cozy” mystery series by Canadian author, Erika Chase. It starts with the first meeting of the newly-formed "Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society." Lizzie Turner (reading specialist and tutor) suddenly finds the man who moments earlier entered the house outside Molly Matthew’s (book club meeting host) mansion died. Lizzie must find out who killed the man because currently all the book club members are suspects.
PROS: • Decent story line/plot for a cozy mystery with good character development • Mystery centered around a book club and teaching others to read • Name of the book club – loved it - Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society • It centers around a book club and the teaching of reading
CONS: • Series of quotes by mystery authors at the beginning of each chapter; drove me crazy • Story drag in various parts of the book • Too much repetitive text on her daily routines and feeding her cats
OVERALL: Good start to a cozy mystery series. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
