A love story with a twist. Even as children he was captivated.
Then to awaken from a coma with no memory he has to start from scratch.
The wife he cant remember is beatiful.
More family stories to come. Well worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secrets, Secrets, Secrets! 16 June 2014

Maaaaan! There were so many secrets floating around this story I lost count! Just when I thought "all had been revealed", someone shows up with MORE information! Whew!

On the night of his marriage to Ebony, Felix Essien is critically injured and lies in a coma for months. When he awakens, he has no memory of how he came to be hospitalized, and no memory of his wedding or his wife...or the conditions of their marriage. He can recall something about a marriage and his board giving him an ultimatum, but little else. Ebony is immediately on edge. Once she and his family members assure Felix that he is indeed married to Ebony, and his father intimates that Felix has "something to atone for", he seems bound and determined to get close to his wife. He can tell she's hiding something, but giving him too much information can hinder his recovery, so most choose to instead to let his memory return on its own gradually.

His memory does slowly return...with good and bad consequences. As they do, secrets are revealed, and good lord! Everyone has them! The reader is blindsided more than once...and there's nothing you can do about it! LOL!

My favorite part of the story is that even though Felix and Ebony are on shaky ground, even though there are secrets and unspoken words; even though there is hesitancy, they do not turn away from each other. Despite the pain and anger, there is still communication. And, when you have that, you have hope.

Kudos to Kiru Taye for including a glimpse of book 2 at the end of the story. While it opens up another door, the scene itself is very satisfying! (D@mn Dele!)

Anxiously awaiting "Making Scandal".

5.0 out of 5 stars GRIPPING 10 April 2015

I must admit that while this is not the first of Kiru’s books I’ve read, Keeping Secrets is the first of her books to hook me from the word go. Well that is not entirely true. Her other books I read hooked me but Keeping Secrets did so in a forceful way. The book actually forced you to take a big note of it.! It is that very well written, with rich and poetic settings in Lagos, Nigeria. Maybe that was one factor that got to me; I mean Ghana and Nigerian are sisters so to speak but hei, we are no where near the grandeur and opulence of the nouveux riche in Nigeria! :-) And this was well displayed in Keeping Secrets with the opulence understated!

The Essiens are the kings of African finance. A close-knit family, their father is the patriarch of a finance dynasty that ranges from retail to investment banking spanning the African continent. Yet all is not as it seems.

The story of Ebony and Felix, one of the Essien sons, is so gripping and fast paced, unfolding as you read along in flashback, thus the suspense and intrigue very well maintained till the end. As we all know, keeping secrets in any relationship especially marriage might be a big recipe for disaster and both Felix and Ebony have secrets that threaten their new marriage. Felix’ memory loss works to Ebony’s advantage but she is never at ease for fear that her husband would regain his memory. Nevertheless, she takes advantage of his obvious concern and passion for her.

The characters are flawed, but naturally and humanely so and therein lies the beauty of the characterization. I love them for the passion and love they show towards each other. The chemistry between them is so palpable, even with Felix’ memory loss. Perhaps, because of his deep love for her, he is able to see that things just do not seem to add up. Both characters are strong and stubborn; Felix, hot, masterful and always in control; Ebony sexy, elegant and independent. In the end, secrets, betrayals and manipulations gave way to love and forgiveness.

I don’t think I have really done justice to this book, honestly. You need to read it and see what I mean. :-) Kiru Taye is an expert storyteller in the romance genre; throwing in Igbo words here and there with doses of of Igbo culture and tradition to give the novel an authentic but contemporary African feel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved the story idea 8 November 2016

I loved the story idea, and I loved how new pieces of the puzzle kept surfacing throughout the read.
The cultural differences were less to my liking (the story takes place in Nigeria), as I favor more outgoing, unreserved characters and prefer sassier heroines.

The book:
• 292 Pages • Contemporary • Standalone • Happily Ever After • In A Series • Third-Person Narrative • Her POV • His POV

The romantic theme:
• Second Chances

The read:
• Good Pace • Touching • Twists & Turns • Sexy • Dramatic

Heat level:
• 2 / 5 (Includes sex scenes, but not overly explicit) • MF scenes • Vanilla Sex

Story ingredients:
• Relationship Agreement • Amnesia • Big Secret • Mystery & Suspense • Cheating

He is...
• Alpha Male • Hot • Fit • Wealthy

She is...
• Stunning • Curvy Figure • Had Few Bed Partners • Troubled Past
5.0 out of 5 stars First read by Kiru but will not be my last 22 September 2016

This was my first time reading a book by Kiru but will not be my last. The book was written well with very few mistakes; story was very interesting with some exceptional twists that keep the reader's attention. I love the characters, especially Felix and Ebony who are the main couple in this book, but I'm sure there will be books following with the additional characters mentioned in the future. My interest is piqued to find out what happens with the other characters therefore I will definitely be buying additional books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised 17 January 2015

The last few books I purchased were around the $5 mark and this gem of a novel was a freebie and better than some of my recent purchases. I selected this book on a whim just to see if my Kindle was downloading properly. I didn't read the description and had no clue what it was about...however, while under the dryer at the salon, I gave it a try and was so glad that I did. After past experiences with novels based on different countries, cultural experience, and vernacular, I tend to shy away from them because the great effort it takes to bridge the gap of understanding takes the fun out of leisure reading. This book however was good from start to finish. The depictions of Nigerian culture and landscape was done in such a way that an American layman can easily understand. I like how the story unfolded and the growth of the characters. I also like the familial bonds and devotion. I was so pleasantly surprised and glad for the freebie. I will definitely check out other books from the author. Oh, and their characters chemistry was so electrifying that it translated far beyond the African/African American/Anglo was hot!
