Daniel Kunis tells an intriguing tale of magical realism about a girl named Ada who stays with her grandfather for the summer and visits the keeper, an old friend of her grandfather. A relationship evolves between Ada and the keeper and Ada learns of his magic but also of the wartime atrocities. The keeper reveals the source of his magic to Ada as well as an old prophecy that compels Ada to grow up fast. Ada soon finds herself tested and she proves her great courage and that she is worthy of her new role.
And while the book is short, I certainly found this story captivating, the characters unique and interesting and the writing effective. The language and vocabulary was old fashioned but it was fun to read and suited thee story. Younger readers may struggle with some of the language. As the previous reviewer recommended, this book would make for an interesting read as part of a middle school and high school holocaust studies curriculum.
