I was struck by the lusciousness of this novel both physically; the Australian bush with its lilting birds and the fiery orange boldness of the trumpet flowers, and emotionally with two young lovers scrapping out their relationship on the North Coast of NSW.
The historical placement of this novel is just after WW2 and Bridie and Will the two main characters meet at a Victory dance. Bridie, the young woman "with with tossing dark hair that cascaded around her shoulders like Vivien Leigh or one of the other Hollywood stars”, as one of the main characters has big dreams and they don’t always coincide with reality.
This story is her chance to shine but not with out the angst of a husband with different dreams, her beloved brilliant child thrown from a horse and a secret lover.
A good read interspersed with an evocative rich landscape and emotional heart strings being pulled. The research to place this story after the war is extensive.
