As a certified Scrum Master who bought this book hoping to learn more about Kanban-style Agile development, I'm baffled by the good reviews. There's really no nice way to say this: it's horribly written. Sentences read like they've been cranked out by the random word generator. There are fragments, grammatical errors, and just plain awkward constructions everywhere. The result is that it's exhausting trying to understand what the author is trying to say.
Before you buy it, I recommend reading some of the "Look Inside" and see if it makes sense to you. I wish I did, as it would have saved me shipping it back. (Keep in mind that the writing gets worse as you go along.) After twenty pages, I just couldn't take it any longer. I skimmed ahead, saw that it was all the same, and gave up. It's a shame, as I think the author knows his stuff, but it's just too much work trying to figure out what he's trying to say.
Take, for example, this sentence: "Work in progress (WIP) limits invent on the principles to assist the staff to maintain concentration on providing an excellent product." I mean, I can kind of figure it out if I read it three times, but ouch.
Here's another one: "Invite your client to become involved Kanban and on following to be able to have a continuous feed of job for your staff." I think I know what he means, but it certainly doesn't make for easy reading.
Last one: "Once it is reasonable to restrict work in advance (WIP) on work inside our hands, it does not on subcontractor work." Huh?
It's all like this. Every sentence is like cracking some mysterious code from Kanban Yoda. I've been doing Scrum for years and understand the core elements of Agile well, but at times I had no idea what the author is saying.
The content is also poorly organized. Ideas jump around, and sentences often don't connect from one to the other. I suspect many of the paragraphs are just condensed notes from a PowerPoint or something. Sometimes I'd read a paragraph, kind of understand what it says, then read a paragraph that says the same thing two paragraphs later, just using different words.
I know how hard it is to write a book, and I feel somewhat bad for leaving such a negative review. But when you're charging $37 for a book, the reader deserves something that's understandable, well organized, and has at least had one editing pass to clean up grammatical errors. This has none of that. This is a hastily tossed together first draft of a book badly in need of revisions for clarity, organization, and focus.
On a good note, the cover is pretty.
