They are absolutely PERFECT for hiking, they are SO COMFORTABLE, giving me the support I need while leaving room in the toe box for my wide feet, and the high tops don't hurt my ankles at all. These are my all time favorite hiking shoes!! I think size 8.5 would be fine for everyday walking, but I find when hiking I need a more snug fit in order to protect my feet and ankles from injury. So I actually wear a half size smaller than I would in regular width shoes, and only a half size larger than I would in wide shoes. I don't like wearing heavy socks, but these boots are warm and comfy with the thinner socks I prefer!
I decided to try these since they were on the lower priced end of hiking boots and had great reviews. I was sort of pressured to get a pair and I had no expectations of them being comfortable. I am usually a size 9 in boots and sneakers (I could sometimes wear 8.5 on a sandal). I wound up buying a 9.5 in these and am very happy that I did. I wore 2 pairs of socks, 1 light under 1 heavy. I didn't break these in as, again, I was expecting to have a painful day of hiking and thought no amount of breaking them in would help me.
I wore them on a pretty aggressive 8 mile hike (round trip) right out of the box. It was a very steep mountain and I couldn't believe that I ended the day with no blisters, red spots, ankle pain, etc. I even kept them on after the hike, instead of changing into sneakers I had brought with me. I look forward to more hikes this summer in my KEEN boots!
