Product Description

#1 USA Today and New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks continues her suspenseful and sizzling Slow Burn series with the fifth book featuring the men and women of Devereaux Security Services.

Raised in a strict religious cult since she was a young girl, Jenna has no connection to the outside world beyond vague flashes of memory that seem to be from another life. Memories she clings to when the cult leaders discover her extraordinary ability to heal—and punish her. Years held captive and forced to do the cult's bidding have turned Jenna into a meek, timid woman…or so they think. In truth, she is merely biding her time, waiting for the perfect moment to escape.

When a terrified young woman tries to steal the SUV of Devereaux Security’s toughest recruit, Isaac’s anger quickly turns into a strange sort of protectiveness for the beautiful, bruised stranger. But when they are caught in a firestorm of bullets and Isaac is hit, he’s sure the end is near, until Jenna touches him and closes his wounds. As he tries to bring Jenna to safety, she refuses to tell him what danger haunts her or how she healed him, but Isaac vows to do whatever it takes to gain her trust…and her heart. Because with just one touch, Isaac knows he wants Jenna to be his—forever.

This story started with a wallop and kept on delivering. Twists and turns constantly keep the pace going, a really bad duo of miscreants terrorising the heroine made for a great read. Thank you

1.0 out of 5 stars BORING WORD SALAD 24 May 2017
By Gardengirl - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
It's been a while since I read one of Maya's books, and now, I remember why.........page after page after page of boring thought salad. I used to look forward to Maya's books. I loved the Highland and Montgomery series until she failed to write the third Montgomery book and left us hanging. Anyway, back to this book. We have a 20+ young woman who has been held captive in a cult her whole life. She has no idea of the outside world -- a TV scares her to death. She's only been given vegetables, and very little of that. She's a virgin who has been threatened with rape, and though she's escaped and is terrified they will find her and her rescuers and kill them, within two days, she's having sex with one of them, and he's suddenly in love for the rest of his life. Nonsense. An innocent, terrified young woman hops into bed with this big, bad guy after knowing him for two days? But, that wouldn't be so bad except we have to read page after page after page of her thoughts about him and page after page after page of his thoughts about her. I got about half way through this book and then returned it because it was so boring. Sorry, Maya, but it's almost like someone else is writing your books for the last few years. If you ever write that third Montgomery book, I will come back to you, but these "suspense" books, filled with word salad are not for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wow. 26 May 2017
By Katie Loves to Read - Published on Amazon.com

After I read a few pages, all I could think was how bad could it be? Awful. Horrible. Overwrought. Over the course of a week, the hero meets the girl, falls in eternal love at first sight, loses the girl, rescues the girl, loses her again, finds her as she saves herself. That's a standard trope. But the writing though... More time is spent waxing long and hard about her beauty, her innocence, his love, his desire, her beauty, his promises and vows to love her forever. She's his. No one can touch her. He loves her. She is his world! He is devoted to her forever. He will love her forever! The main hero, Isaac, sounded like a psychotic stalker. In real life he would be a creepy guy living in his mom's basement, except we are supposed to believe he is a harass security expert. Right. All the men are super tough, handsome, loyal, smothering. The heroine spends most of her time crying. Crying and being carried by the hero. Crying, being carried by their hero, and marveling at the modern world!!!

Kidnapped as a young child by an evil cult for her ability to heal any mortal or minor boo boo, she was kept isolated from the modern world, abused, tortured, and ignorant. She was forced to heal the Elders and fed only vegetables. But, somehow, she could read, steal a car, and plan an elaborate disguise including hair dye, non descript clothing, and a cash only job, and cry. Cry and be beautiful.

Too much angst, rage, eternal love, devastation and crying. The plot made no sense. The resolution made no sense. Lots of mortal shootings which she healed. Lots of EMOTIONS. Lots of FEELS. Crying, crying, carrying, and crying. Ugh. And, the was no description of anyone except the beautiful heroine. She was beautiful with long curly white blond hair and unusually blue, blue crying eyes.

I will not read any more from this author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmmmm 24 May 2017

I live Maya's stories. I really do. But this one fell flat for me. These bad and dangerous men act wimpy to me and they jardly have any action. It's mostly between the two main characters and its just constant same emotional stuff. I got to the point where i thought, "okay! You feel bad for her and love her more than life itself! Get a grip! She's in danger!!!" Our heroine confused me. She's supposed ti be beaten down but not broken. Yet she spends tons of her awake time crying. In addition, she goes from bein weak yo all of a sudden a strong woman that doesn't need rescuing. Ummm how? She's been weak the entire book! Plus, there didn't seem to be much of a side effect from using her gift (like with the other women). Hardly any action compared yo the other books. I was disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good romantic suspense with a paranormal bent 24 May 2017
By Sheila M - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
"But the simple truth was that he needed her every bit as much as she needed him, and he couldn't come up with a reason that made any sense to him."

FINAL DECISION: A good romantic suspense with a paranormal bent. The weakest part of the story is the instant love between the main characters. That being said, the two are a good match and the story is well paced and filled with twists.

THE STORY: Isaac Washington comes out to his car after getting coffee and bagels to find someone attempting to steal his vehicle. Instead of the thief he expected, Isaac finds Jenna -- a young abused woman who is fleeing for her life. When Isaac is shot by her pursuers, he finds out why. Jenna saves Isaac's life when she heals his mortal wound. Once he meets her, Isaac, who works for Devereaux Security is determined to use his skills to protect this vulnerable woman.

OPINION: This was a good suspense story with a paranormal twist as is true of the other book in the Slow Burn series.

The main weakness of the story from my view is the instant love aspect. Before the two even know anything about one another, there is something between them. (That works in many books where there is a paranormal or supernatural aspect, but here there is no "mate" or explanation for the instant connection). But this book is anxious to get into the suspense story and deep into the potential of the relationship. I can put aside my initial disbelief in the instant love if the rest of the story is good...and this one worked for me.

Isaac is a strong alpha protector and is determined to protect Jenna and make those who have harmed her pay. While he is possessive, he is also completely devoted to Jenna from almost the moment that they meet. He throws over everything in his life to help her. While the devotion appears unrealistic at times, it also jacks up the tension and suspense in the story because the immediate devotion he has for Jenna makes the story move.

Jenna begins the story abused and weak. But she does not stop there. Much of the story is about Jenna discovering herself and obtaining autonomy over herself. There are quite a few twists and turns in the story and I don't want to give any of the plot away because the suspense is an essential part of the story.

WORTH MENTIONING: Readers should be willing to accept Banks version of the Alpha male who is possessive with a lot of talk about the heroine belonging to him. Some might find it a little too aggressive and controlling.

CONNECTED BOOKS: JUST ONE TOUCH is the fifth book in the Slow Burn series. While there are overlapping characters, this story is independent of others in the series and can be read alone. There are plenty of appearances by the characters from the other books and readers of those books will be happy for the updates.

STAR RATING: I give this book 3.5 stars.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book via Edelweiss in order to write a review. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions contained herein are my own.
5.0 out of 5 stars Another Winner 26 May 2017

Maya Banks spins exquisite tales filled with love, romance, sex, danger, mystery, and intrigue. She can have you on the edge of your seat or pushed back against the wall through the powerful emtions of her characters or the events being played out in the story.

Isaac Washington's life is saved by Jenna while he lays dying after being shot n a parking lot. Even before she saves him, Isaac recognizes the vulnerability and terror in this young woman and is determined to save her while sacrificing his own life. Jenna saves him and escapes with Isaac's help, thus beginning a remarkable journey for them both.

Jenna's naivete and innocence come from her lack of exposure to the outside world yet she has an inner core of strength and resolve that makes her a survivor. In saving Isaac's life she transforms him. He finally sheds the darkness in his soul that has plagued him all his life. His protectiveness of Jenna quickly evolves to love. He will do anything to keep her safe. In return, Jenna learns about love and relationships from Isaac.

All the characters from previous books in the series are interwoven in this story. The DSS family once again rallies together to protect Jenna as one of their own. They battle the drug lord who will stop at nothing to capture Jenna.

Maya Banks is a gifted writer and a true master craftsman. Every word, sentence and paragraph are created to maximize the reading experience. Her characters are so varied, complex, and multilayered. I've yet to meet one I wasn't drawn to (we,, except the bad guys of course.) I continue to be amazed by Maya's creative proliferative output. She achieves the same high standard of excellence with each new book release.
