Sometimes you read a story written by someone who truly understands the Australian bush - it's true beauty and wildness. I understand the joy of knowing you have something special on your property and the passion required to protect it - meaning you must understand the predator/prey cycles of the ecosystem you're dealing with.
The start of the story is heart wrenching and had me hooked from start to finish as I watched Kim's journey progress with her grief and her commitment to wildlife and bush regeneration. The vivid descriptions of the bush through each season made me want to be there! Yet, I'm pleased that the author tackled the hard issues - dingo predation, damaging land uses, refugees, weeds, feral animals, wildlife care - yet brought the story into balance with other perspectives and impacts.
Of course, the story engaged me too! It made my cry! It made me laugh too! The romance is wonderful. The mysterious Taj and his own haunted past and how it comes together with Kim's. The emerging love between Kim & Taj is tangible yet allusive and there are plenty of obstacles and distractions to overcome along the way. The relationships with her children as they adapt to living in the country and coming to terms with losing their father were touching and felt real. The small town characters were believable and added charm and a realistic edge to the story, particularly their own opinions on what Kim proposed and how it affected them.
This book was a pleasure to read and I didn't want to it to end. Journey's End is not the end, it's the start!
I can't wait for Jennifer Scoular's next book! Well done.
