I felt let down by this book. The story held great promise. But I found it a struggle to read. I didn't warm to any of the characters. Each one was looking for something in their lives that was missing. And each one blamed an over bearing father and husband for what was lacking. I thought this premise was weak, given that they'd had years to move on. Well written and the historical/touristy aspects were described well.

I went in with high hopes as usually ReeseHello Sunshine Pick book recommendations are winners but this book was a miss. I found it didn't grab me as a story . It was well written but not a page turner.

Loved reading this during lock down. Travel and the family dynamics were intertwined. Simmering undercurrent of family secrets were exciting

Just ok.

Couldn’t really like this family even though they’d obviously had past traumas, especially Lee, but I always like “family reunion” style novels so enjoyed the idea of a reunion on a cruise. Charlotte and her three grown-up children all have secrets and issues which they’re forced to reveal to each other as their European cruise progresses. Interesting reading this at a time when many poor souls were stuck on cruise ships because of the corona virus and wondering how the Perkins family would have coped. I also wonder if this is one of those books you have to be American to really get??

I love books about dysfunctional families. I love good chick lit. I love a good holiday read.
Sadly, this book left me unimpressed and quite slow-going, so many serious issued locked in just over 300 pages long. I grew to appreciate author's sense of humour even though I found it pretty annoying (all too American) in the beginning. It’s just an okay reading but nothing special. None of the characters were likeable. Although, with the right production company behind it, I can imagine it could make one great comedy/romcom.
"Lee had never realized how hideous most of the world was until Rome."
Perhaps wait until the film. I hope there will be one.

I only picked this up for an easy read as it was a Reese Witherspoon book club recommendation I thought it must be worth a read. It wasn't.
Just boring chick lit. Very disappointed.

The holiday of a lifetime beckons?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 15 May 2020Verified Purchase
Bittersweet. A story of a family bound together yet torn apart by a tragedy, each one looking to find their way through the fallout to peace, if not happiness. This is an easy-to-read story but deceptively deep, tackling depression, addiction, failure and betrayal and yet it manages to stay afloat despite it’s weighty intent.

Bad beyond belief

I don't usually leave bad reviews, but this is so appalling I had to say something. I don't understand how Penguin can let writing of this low standard go out with their name on it, unless it's a self-publising imprint with no editorial control. Poor writing, no character arc, loads of discrepancies and inconsistencies. If you want good writing from female authors go to Jojo Moyes, Milly Johnson, Adele Parks or Lindsey Kelk. Not this.
