Product description

Product Description

Two accountants and an ancient Land Rover named Jerrycan – well, it seemed like a good idea at the time! A humorous account of an overland journey through southern Africa that seldom went to plan, was rarely problem free and strained regularly the already tenuous relationship between man and this temperamental machine – to say nothing of that between man and accompanying wife!

A well written and wry account of the author's travels. The descriptions of poverty stricken African life are quite disturbing. The mechanical problems with Jerry only help to embellish the tale and should not put anybody off using this mode of excellent transport.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully done tale 19 April 2016

Five stars is a rare rating from me. A great book will rate four…only a truly exceptional one will make the cut for five. This is one of those books.
I am a great fan of overland travel stories and read a lot of them. The majority of those stories emphasize all the great things seen and done and will perhaps mention, as if in passing, the bad times. Those stories also tend toward showing how accepting and in harmony the travelers are with the world and the people in it. Acceptance and integration is the norm and never would they act like the stereotypical Western Tourist!

What Mr Brading offers us is a bit different. It is a first person account of his trip and he holds little back. But it is not a “in your face” kind of thing…he doesn’t seem to be trying to prove a point or to shock… He is just telling it like he sees it. Often he will offer deeper thoughts and speculation regarding the things he tells us about and this tends to round out the book nicely.
This makes the book difficult to read sometimes… I often found myself frustrated with the choices he makes or the things he does. However, to be fair, he seems to recognize this moments and will usually explore that idea or incident in more thought and detail as he goes along.

All in all a great read. If you like overland travel, this book is a great choice and good bargain.
5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining 19 April 2017

Admittedly I was rather concerned by the prospect of a book written by an accountant... it's hardly a good start after all. Possibly all that tipped the balance was the probability that an accountant overlanding in an old Landie was bound to result in disaster. Following that theme, once I started reading, like an impending wreck I just couldn't look away. Yet somehow the accountant proved to have some redeeming features... and as the Landie slowly but surely moulded him into a slightly more well adjusted and fit for purpose human being, an intriguing travel tale unfolded. Anyone who has not driven an old Landie might not grasp the subtleties involved in climbimg mountains with blown head gaskets, and crossing deserts with an engine that drinks more water than the passengers. Fear not, this well written tale will have you scouring the classifieds looking for a restorers dream in no time.
