If you have not had the pleasure of reading one (or more) of Shauna Bickley's novels, then this anthology of five short stories will serve as a worthwhile introduction. Five stories of different lengths (3,000 to 18,000 words), all with strong central characters and topical themes of grief, loss, love, despair. Two of the stories connect to two of Bickley's novels:
'Jenny's Story', the longest, is the storyline that didn't make it into the novel 'Lives Interrupted', with its central event, the 2005 London bombings. 'In Plain Sight' began as part of the Lexie Wyatt novel, 'The Worst Lie' but Bickley felt it suited the short story form. If you enjoy these two short stories, I encourage you to read the novels.
'A Private Investigation' centres around a crime in Rotorua, New Zealand, 'Footprints' was triggered by a newspaper article and 'In the End', also set in Rotorua uses the Māori myth of Hinemoa and Tutanekai as a backdrop to the very different love story between Patrick and Callie, the narrator.
