I have researched for some time for the best performing mic as I spend hours on calls daily and I certainly was not disappointed with the Jabra 85 headphones!
Not only were they delivered far earlier than expected – they were so simple to setup (and were fully charged!)
They look sleek and stylish... Smaller than I was expecting which was a bonus. The material covering looks awesome - I will however need to see if it holds up after some heavy use over time.
It has a number of buttons conveniently located on both sides of the headphones. They are all physical buttons which I actually prefer over touch controls that I have struggled with on my Philips. They are really responsive and a number of voice prompts ensure you always know what's happening.
They cup around my ears gently whilst sitting securely which is a great for winter to double up as ear muffs! They are comfy to fall asleep with them on for a few hours on end and not wake up with sore ears!
The active noise cancelation is brilliant and the tap of a button to add HearThrough allows you to re-join the world around you without having to remove the headphones!
There are some cool features like turning on/off when the ear covers are turned and pausing / muting when taken off. There are a lot of advanced settings on the app for various Moments (environments). They also go to sleep when not in use which prevent that frustrating feeling when you grab your headsets in the morning and realise you left them on!
I can connect to multiple devices at the same time like my TV or laptop and phone. The Bluetooth range is the best out of any of my devices and I can walk around my place without any interruptions.
I called some audiophile buddies to test out the mic in different environments and on different (on VoLTE, voice, VoIP & WhatsApp ) and they were all super impressed!
I ran some audio tests and they handled low frequencies superbly. High frequencies also are fantastic although at my age I need the kids to test the upper frequencies!
They came in a handy rigid travel case with USB C charge cable, 3.5mm and airplane adaptor.
Overall I am completely satisfied with them and they have performed beyond expectation. Although they are my first Jabra’s – they certainly are not my last!
The build quality is superb - they feel luxurious and robust. The battery was charged to 80% upon unboxing the item so I could use them straight away. The headphones were easy to set up using the Sound+ app and even prompted me to download the latest firmware.
The noise cancelling seems to work well and I appreciate the ability to choose between the Active Noise Cancelling, Hear Through (which actually seems to enhance ambient sounds, conversations, etc. whilst music is playing), and switching the noise cancelling off altogether.
Having used Sennheiser prior to these, I can honestly say that the Jabras trump them!
Since I purchased and reviewed the Navy version of the Jabra Elite 85e, there's been one problem...that is my 10 year old son loves them so much for gaming and watching Youtube that I rarely get to use them. When I do find them, he's left the battery flat. This is where the fast charge feature kicks in and in 15 to 20 minutes I get more than enough time to listen to music or watch movies late at night at decent levels without waking anyone up. My time. ;-)
So, everything I said in my previous review (Below) stands, but I've been so impressed by the sound quality, the relative performance of the digital active noise cancellation (compared to my old Sony and Sennheiser NC headphones) and what surely has to be one of, if not the best battery life yet on a fairly priced, high-end wireless NC headphone. The run time from a good charge really is exceptional and the comfort is the best I've found so far. Once adjusted to your head these never get painful, heavy or too hot. So, earlier this month, I ordered a second Jabra Elite 85e...strictly for me. They are that good I decided to gift the navy ones to my son and keep the black/Copper pair that arrived today.
I'm really happy I did and will enjoy them on long-flights, late-night movies up loud and especially for playing my favorite tunes whilst I work. Calls are exceptionally clear, the app is good and there are no missing features I can think off.
Jabra has done their homework, the product is outstanding and it's hard to really fault it or see what they could do it really improve it much more for the money.
Highly recommended by someone who loves music, quality sound reproduction and appreciates durable, quality products. These surely are the best wireless NC headphones for the price I have found.
Original Review: Navy Jabra Elite 85e
I have been looking to buy a new quality NC headphone after my son dropped my last set of Bose NC and I read about the new Jabra's. I've had a few NC headphones over the years from Sony, Sennheiser and Bose and these beat them all hands down in audio performance.
The design and materials are great and the deep blue model really looks great. Very subtle, tactile, very study and thank god, there's no Beats style bling to be found here, these are headphones for grown-ups as their performance reveals immediately. The headphones have a wide range of adjustment (to fit my big head) and it takes seconds to find a supremely comfortable fit. The ultra soft earpieces are the best and you can wear these for hours chilling at home or on a flight without feeling uncomfortable.
The app is good and offers a range of settings and customisable EQ but unless your source material is that bad the fine-tuned balance of the Jabra Elite 85h is perfect out of the box and best left alone. Importantly for an NC headphone with a class leading 36 hour battery life (Sony take note!), these things are very light when wearing them but somehow feel sturdy in the hand.
Music Performance is superb, the key theme of these headphones is "balance" and the sound offers just that. The mids offer exceptional resolution without being too prominent or recessed as I've found on Bose and Sennheiser NC headphones. High frequencies are delivered with great life and energy without being fatiguing though are slightly soft and reserved compared to my reference AKG wired headphones. Bass is deep, quick and has great detail and texture and offers a real full-range foundation and support without being overly loud and slow/undefined as I've found on Bose and very much with Sennheiser NC headphones. They seem to natively have a boosted bass and high frequency range which is initially very impressive but it doesn't take long before the overblown bass and prominent treble starts to annoy. Here with the Jabra we have a more natural balance. The electronics here are great, the headset pairs over bluetooth very fast, the internal amplification and drivers stay clean until the very last click or two on volume where they start to reach their limits and the clarity and control starts to slip. These are at levels too high to listen to for any length of time so it's not an issue. So for music a very competent headset and the best wireless NC headset at $500 I've ever heard. The sound quality won't beat your reference wired hi-fi headphones with a separate amplifier but for the money and versatility, these offer a hell of a good sound that you can listen to all day without fatigue compared to the big names in the NC space. It's very hard to put on my Bluetooth speakers after listening to these and harder putting on my old wired headphones once you get used to not being on a leash again.
I've only tried the NC and call quality a few times (I just got these) but so far the NC seems to work as well as anything else I've tried and calls are exceptionally clear, no question.
I'm very happy to have tried something new and the Jabra looks like it will last me for quite a while and keep me playing my favorite tunes.
It looks like there's a new class leader for $500 NC headphones in the Jabra Elite 85h and it will be interesting to see how Sony and Bose will react with such a strong new competitor. Very impressed all-round - five stars from me!
