Tanya Reinhart's book exposes two pernicious myths. The First that Ehud Barak ever genuinely offered the Palestinians anything like 97% of their land. In exposing this fakery Reinhart also exposes several other myths around the Barak offer, including the fact that the offer was actually something less than 50% when one takes into account Israeli requirements for security; that even this 50% amounted to real freedom when in fact Israel was always to retain complete military dominance of the whole of Palestine; that offer to allow part of Jerusalem as the capital for Palestine is also exposed as a lie; and finally that Barak intended from the beginning to lock the Palestinians into a course of endless negotiations, which was designed to ensure there would never be a resolution.
She also exposes the fatuity of the claim that Sharon's withdrawal from Gaza showed him to be a leader intent on reaching peace with the Palestinians. What she shows is that unlike most other Israeli politicians (like Ehud Barak) who sought to endlessly extend negotiations to maintain Palestinian apartheid, Sharon actually saw negotiations ending through his plan to ethnically cleans the Palestinians from `Eretz Israel', completing the process begun in 1948. Dismantling the settlements was designed to trap the Palestinians inside the world's largest prison, as a necessary prelude to their relocation to Jordan and Iraq.
Reinhart's post script to the second edition in 2005 about Sharon's Gaza plan she writes that "the crucial factor behind the [Sharon Gaza withdrawal] plan was gaining the time necessary to advance the project of the West Bank barrier" (p. 247). Moreover, the plan made it explicit that the Israeli military would never truly leave the Palestinians in peace.
Subsequent authorities have confirmed the accuracy of Reinhart's view. Oxford Professor of International Relations and Israeli veteran Avi Shlaim, for example, writing in 2009 wrote that, under Sharon's plan, Gaza "was converted overnight into an open-air prison...Withdrawal from Gaza was not a prelude to a peace deal with the Palestinian authority but a prelude to further Zionist expansion on the west bank... [and] part of a long-term effort to deny the Palestinian people any independent political existence on their land." [...]
